E-logbooks Hair and beauty how-to’s

City & Guilds has launched new e-logbooks for its hair and beauty qualifi cations. This new innovation looks

and feels exactly like the City & Guilds logbooks, while also allowing learners and assessors to access all the additional features of the Learning Assistant e-portfolio. Other benefi ts include: • access to multiple portfolios, meaning assessors can manage all their learners and workload from one location

• inspirational logbook content and instant feedback, helping the learner to progress faster

• no more printed logbooks to carry, store or lose – everything you need, from consultation sheets to treatment plans, is stored online

As an introductory offer, the hair and beauty e-logbooks are available free of charge within Learning Assistant for a limited period. To make things easier, City & Guilds and Learning Assistant have put together a helpful pack to get you started (including an Apple iPad 2).

The new e-logbook can be delivered via Learning Assistant’s new app. This

allows the user to complete their work in the salon, uploading the results into the system the next time they connect to the internet.

Engineering apprenticeships On the right track

Vital Skills will be offering learners the opportunity to study for City & Guilds certifi cates as well as following new

apprenticeships which have been developed by GoSkills and the National Skills Academy for Rail Engineering. The ‘Apprenticeship to Fellowship’

scheme was launched by the academy during a conference at the Institute of Mechanical Engineers where Vital Skills was represented by Operations Manager, Lawrence Dobie, who said, ‘Traditionally, engineering institutes have imposed entry requirements based on academic qualifi cations that could discriminate against people who have the potential to rise to the top but who have gone down a vocational route rather than staying in education.’ Vital will be taking learners through

the City & Guilds certifi cate over 12 or 18 months. When students have acquired core qualifi cations and progressed to a level 3 course, Vital may encourage them to specialise in some of its fi elds of excellence.

Speaking about the qualifi cation, Chris Kirk, Head of Apprenticeships

at City & Guilds, said, ‘We need more employers to engage in apprenticeships and Vital Services Group is setting a great example.’
