When she was made redundant from her ICT engineering job, Paula Hames became a teaching assistant for pupils with learning disabilities and started an Advanced Apprenticeship in Children’s Care, Learning and Development. She soon identifi ed a group of children whose behavioural issues were causing them to miss out on certain activities, and began instigating new techniques. ‘My qualifi cation has helped to give me the confi dence to identify ways to improve the current system for children with profound and multiple learning diffi culties,’ she says.
BENJAMIN MORGAN Further Education Sector Learner of the Year Deeside College Flintshire
At just 23, Benjamin Morgan became the go-to guy in the Flintshire area for repairing complex electronic automotive faults. Excelling during his Level 2 NVQ in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, Benjamin has made his career fl ourish through extraordinary determination and commitment, inspiring his tutors and colleagues alike. ‘I am always looking to learn and improve the knowledge I have around cars,’ says Benjamin, who is working towards a modern apprenticeship and was put forward to represent the UK in WorldSkills 2011.
MARION MCLEAN Employee Learner of the Year Charis Consultancy Services Belfast
Despite leaving her job as a PE teacher for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service, Marion McLean remained passionate about workplace learning. Unable to complete an MSC in Lifelong Learning after being diagnosed with cancer, Marion enrolled on a Level 3 qualifi cation in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. ‘It’s important that I keep learning throughout my career so I can enhance my understanding of what I do,’ says Marion, who volunteers teaching disabled young people and adults to swim, alongside her demanding career.
