and China have proved resilient during the recent economic slowdown with governments in these regions remaining committed to the growth
of their healthcare infrastructure. Currently, hospital build programmes in the GCC are worth an estimated US$14 billion, with Saudi Arabia currently constructing a total of 83 projects. Turn to page 12 to find out more about the value and worth of build projects around the Middle East today. In addition, in this issue we highlight several
projects in the region that are near completion, which proves just how fast moving and forward-thinking the healthcare sector is. Specialty Hospital is strongly integrated with the child healing process. Particular attention has been given to energy saving strategies in the hospital, to introduce the application of sustainability in a healthcare facility. As well as new facilities, we must also
remember existing facilities and the work they are doing to keep up with modern-day technology. Refurbishment of existing facilities is a major part of the Hospital Build industry and Stephen Fenn, Director of Facilities Management at the American Hospital Dubai touches on this in his article on page 20. Although it has been operational in the region for 15 years, the American Hospital continually faces many changes in terms of infection control, management, refurbishment and sustainability.
