AK Hospital is built on a 200,000 sq. ft. plot and has a built up area of 146,000 sq. ft. over three levels.
The hospital has 65 beds and includes all service areas required for a tertiary level facility. The success story of this project can be attributed not only to the over-all design objectives but the integration of human elements into the design. The focus of the concept was not to create a building that looks architecturally fashionable but to create, through design, an environment that is both luxurious and comforting for its occupants. The main concern being the experience of patients, visitors and staff alike as they go about the building marveling at how it facilitates the care process. This has been proven at three consecutive Hospital Build Awards. In the first year it was highly commended for ‘Best External Design’, in the second year highly commended for ‘Best Healing Environment’, and in the third year, finally winning the award for ‘Best Healing Environment in a Hospital in the Middle East’. In this same year, the hospital also bagged the title for ‘Best Hospital Project’ at the Arab Achievement Awards in Abu Dhabi.
The story of this hospital began in 2005 with an idea under the vision of His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council of UAE and Ruler of the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah, which was nurtured then by the experience and deep understanding of healthcare of Mr. Raza Siddiqui, Executive Director of ETA Star Healthcare and Chairman of the Steering Committee of RAK Hospital. Their shared vision of creating a truly world-class and service-oriented premium facility was then presented to Ellerbe Becket, an internationally renowned healthcare design firm based in Washington, DC. After a series of discussions and several exchanges between the two, an initial design concept was born. This design was engineered to bring together modern and contemporary architectural elements intended to show case the state-of-the- art cutting-edge medical technology inside the building; with traditional warm Arabic architecture and materials, which gives the building its warmth and creates a true feeling of welcoming hospitality. This is something that had not been tried earlier and the very motto of the company ‘Premium Healthcare;
