he American Hospital Dubai has been on the site in Oud Metha for 15 years. During this period it has gone
from a single two-storey building providing the healthcare needs of the local population to a three-facility campus covering 111,000 square metres, providing elective surgery, diagnostics and emergency services. It is acknowledged as the benchmark for healthcare excellence in the region. The hospital now receives patients from
throughout the GCC region, Africa and Asia. It is testament to the owners’ vision and commitment to healthcare in the region that they continued to build the latest addition to the facility, a seven-storey Bed Tower, during 2008 and 2009 when the number of distressed properties in Dubai was increasing on a daily basis.

It is not sufficient to have an aesthetically pleasing facility, this must be backed up by the provision of advanced technology and excellent staff at all levels within the organisation. At the American Hospital this investment is significant; a Linear Accelerator and associated facilities has been installed in a purpose built bunker at a cost in excess off AED15.00M. It is the only unit in the region and is now treating patients with aggressive cancers. This service will be supplemented when the hospital starts to develop an ablation therapy service. The hospital is built to US standards and
was the first hospital in the Middle East to receive JCIA accreditation and thereby setting the benchmark for all facilities in the region that followed. The three main challenges facing hospital operators in the region at the present time are: Accreditation with a recognised agency (such as the Joint Commission for International Accreditation (JCIA)); cost saving
