From historic South Quay right through to the seafront you can witness the changing face of the town’s architecture. A walk, taking in the narrow Rows and Market Place, will lead you from the
Medieval period through to Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian buildings.
The area was just a sandbank surrounded by the sea when the Romans built their forts at Burgh Castle and Caister-on-Sea. Ruins can be visited at both sites, as can the remains of a 14th century Augustinian priory at St. Olaves.
“ Housed in an old smoke house with the smell of
smoked herring still wafting through the rafters, the Time & Tide museum features a replica Great Yarmouth Row and a herring quay, showcasing what life would have been like for all who worked in the fishing industry in Great Yarmouth from medieval times until the early 1900s.”
