W
atching or playing, Great Yarmouth has plenty to offer sports enthusiasts.
Organised events kick off in March with the Sport Relief Mile along the seafront, followed by the East Coast Triathlon in April. May sees the return of the Great Yarmouth leg of the Volleyball England Beach Tour, in which men’s and women’s teams compete for points in the national tournament. In June, Soccer on the Sands takes place, a fun competition for children’s youth teams. Kids, dads and mums are invited to tackle the Scrum on the Beach challenge in July, when this lively competition returns to Central Beach.
The 67th Festival of Bowls, the UK’s largest open outdoor bowling event, attracts players from all over the country in August, when bowlers young and old take to the Britannia Bowling Greens for four weeks of competition.
Our wide, spacious beaches are superb for all kinds of sports. But you don’t have to take part in organised sports to enjoy the beaches. North Beach is a big attraction for kite flyers, for example, Gorleston-on-Sea beach is popular with surfers and kite surfers and sea fishing is enjoyed by lots of anglers all along the coast. Inland, a choice of fisheries can be found at Burgh Castle, on the Trinity Broads at Filby, Rollesby and Stokesby and on the river at Martham.
If you fancy trying your hand at tennis, bowls, basketball or cricket there are courts and pitches for hire throughout the borough of Great Yarmouth. We also have a choice of horse-riding centres, swimming pools and a free-to-use trim trail on Gorleston-on-Sea cliff tops.
