Sunshine and s Volvo CE’s Fam
Volvo Construction Equipment Division, Volvo Group UK Ltd
held a family fun day at its Duxford facility for staff and their families, Volvo pensioners and local invited guests on Sunday 3rd July, using the event to raise money for the
Addenbrookes C2 Children’s Ward.
The Volvo family day attracted around 700 people to the Duxford site throughout the day where a whole range of activities and entertainment were laid on appealing to all age groups. Visitors were able to have a go at digging holes and trenches with models from Volvo’s mini digger range; take an excavator skills challenge and even drive the bigger machines thanks to two state of the art simulators. Visitors were also given a live close up demonstration of how a paving machine lays a road.
Besides the machines, kids and grown ups had fun playing THE VOICE PAGE 36
on a whole range of bouncy castles as well as bungee jumping, a bucking bronco and trying their luck at a variety of funfair style stalls. Face painting, competitions and tours of the Duxford facility were also included and everyone was treated to a first class bar-b-que style lunch. Live entertainment was provided by local Cambridge impresarios – Fat Friday.
Whilst the event was staged for Volvo staff and their families, the company extended a warm invitation to the local parish councils, and children from Duxford’s C of E junior school. Prior to the event Volvo invited the children at the school to take part in a painting competition with the winners from all age groups and their families being included in the event. The standard of drawing and painting was exceptional and five lucky winners and their families attended the fun day.
Similarly the day was used to raise money for the Adden- brookes C2 children’s ward, the unit having nursed 12 year old Lily DeFrates, daughter of the Duxford facility’s workshop supervisor Andy, back to health after a serious illness. Again three lucky children and their families were invited and in all £880 was raised for the C2 unit charity.
And the wall to wall sunshine even tempted ten Volvo veterans and their families to repay a visit to their old company who thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with old colleagues and were most intrigued with how the facility has developed and changed since their retirement.
Managing Director Val Ledden sums up the atmosphere of the day; “The family day was an opportunity to give a little back for our employees and their families but also to open our doors to the wider local community. It was a fantastic event which truly encapsulated everything that we are about in terms of our brand image, passion for our business and customer focus. This was a memorable day, a very special occasion that the organising committee, vol- unteers and the wider VCE family can be rightly proud of.”
