SCAFFOLDING SUCCESS OVER RIVER CLYDE

the bridge-strengthening contract required at the Whitecart Viaduct on the M8 road bridge in Glasgow was awarded to main client BAM Nuttall Ltd, who approached Turner Access for the scaffolding work. Phase 1 of the project, carried out for another client (Amey), involved inspection of the underside of the bridge soffit and internal structure of the bridge long-boxes. This required installation of the scaffold over a major estuary of the River Clyde. The system’s platform has much lower self-weight in comparison to traditional scaffolding which also limited the load imposed on the bridge. The major challenge in dealing with the


span over the river was solved by casting the initial platform cables across the river, similar to the action used in sea angling.


SPIRAL TOWER TESTS DESIGN SKILLS

victoria hall is wembley’s striking new student living accommodation built by Mace. Situated near Wembley stadium, the £25m structure comprises a 20-storey spiral tower, with three wings encircling the core of the building. The 70m high, 19-storey building involved


straight elevations for which mastclimbers were deployed, in addition to system scaffold used on circular areas of the central spiral shaped tower. Brogan Group also provided goods and personnel hoists for this project. The unique shape of the building


presented Brogan’s design team with several challenges in order to develop an all-encompassing access solution. Scaffold had to be cantilevered and integrated, with the hoist run off towers and in between the


mastclimber locations, whilst following a curved façade. The new building, on a very small footprint, situated between an active university, a residential development and a live railway line, proved challenging in terms of access, logistics and vertical transportation of materials and personnel. Mace and Brogan Group worked closely with safety, management and design teams to overcome these issues – all providing vital input which resulted in a successful outcome. for the project, said: “Mace ensured the delivery of important milestones and the successful completion of Victoria Hall through collaborative working with our sub-contractors, like Brogan Group. Brogan


The alternative would have been installing the cables from above, which would have resulted in road closures and heavy traffic management. Another alternative would have been by boat; however, this would have increased cost and required water permits. During the first phase of installation, the system platform was installed between two large birdcage scaffolds, erected around the piers on either side of the river of this 822m-long bridge. The use of harnesses was completely eliminated throughout the entire assembly of the 20m high scaffold towers. Turner’s system scaffolding with advance guardrails was incorporated into the entire erection process.


The second phase of the project involved access requirements for strengthening works. This included the insertion of internal plates within the bridge long-boxes. In total, 18 access towers have been required; two of which provide access to the underside of the bridge, two provide loading towers and 14 are double-sided towers which provide access to the long-box hatches. The challenge with the towers was to keeping traffic flowing. Six of the towers span major roadways and car parks around Glasgow International Airport, while another cantilevered over pedestrian walkways and encroached onto a busy thoroughfare. The design of the towers resulted in limited traffic management and safety for the public.


Group provided mastclimbers, hoists and scaffolding on a confined site with complex logistics sequencing. It was through working closely with the Brogan designers, contract managers and site foreman that Mace made certain that practical solutions were developed to keep the project to the tight programme. All this was achieved with Brogan maintaining its high health and safety standards.”
