INNOVATIVE APPROACH MEETS UTILITY ROOFING REQUIREMENTS

Utility facility, Liverpool NASC member: BSL (Systems) Ltd Main contractor: MAC Roofing & Contracting Ltd

specialisation in flat roof access for repair and refurbishment work has enabled Liverpool-based BSL (Systems) to develop an enviable reputation in the field and also to develop a range of proven techniques. A prime example has been seen recently during refurbishment in Bolton where BSL (Systems) was appointed by MAC Roofing & Contracting Ltd to provide access and full edge protection for work undertaken

on a key utility facility. “We installed a stair tower to a height of 24 metres, which was also fitted with a hoist, to provide both material and personnel access to the roof,” comments BSL (Systems) owner Joe Bridge. “Additionally, the significant size of the overall roof area highlighted the need for an effective edge protection system

CHURCHSPIREPROVES TO BENOTALLORDER

All Saints Church, Horton,

Bradford NASC member: Kirk Scaffolding Ltd Main contractor: Stone Edge Ltd

first established in 1950, Kirk Scaffolding Ltd is now employing its third generation of family members and, in an industry still dominated by men, is proud to have two women directors on its board. Located in Blackburn it is ideally situated for the motorway network with a catchment area extending south to the Midlands, north to Carlisle, west to the Lancashire coast and east to the city conurbations of Leeds and Bradford. It was in Bradford that Kirk

was appointed by Stone Edge Ltd of Nelson, Lancashire, to erect scaffold to allow repairs to

the tallest spire in the city at All Saints Church Horton. The 201ft-high spire was

found to have serious structural faults and would require the taking down and re-building of the top 8 metres followed by re-pointing of the complete spire and tower. Through the great efforts of the parishioners led by the appropriately named Reverend Treasure, the necessary funds were raised via English Heritage, The National Churches Trust, The Diocesan Church Fund, Garfield Weston Foundation, Yorkshire Historic Churches Trust and All Churches Trust. Work was due to commence in spring 2010 and to be completed and the scaffold removed from site by October of

to be used which would meet key operational requirements. The method needed to be both quick to install and highly adaptable. This pointed us towards the use of the Layher edge protection system, which we installed to provide 400 metres of protection for the duration of the roof refurbishment programme at the site.”

Importantly, BSL (Systems)’s

approach to the edge protection requirement and the equipment used also allowed crane access to the roof when required. A simple procedure enabled the installation to be opened and closed at any point without significant time delays or adverse impact on other areas of the work being undertaken.

the same year. However, drawing all the funding together delayed the project by four months resulting in the scaffolding being dismantled during the coldest and windiest winter of recent years.

Scaffolding historic buildings is a challenge that Kirk is

confident in its ability to meet but it is not its only area of expertise. Renovation of road, rail and river bridges also require the high levels of planning, skill and training that the Kirk family and their staff have displayed over the last 60 years and hope to continue into the future.
