WINDOW ON SUCCESS AT
Blenheim Palace NASC member: JFE Attridge Scaffolding Services Co Ltd Main contractor: Blenheim Palace
blenheim palace is one of the world’s finest country manors. The latest renovation work at this World Heritage Site involved the repair and redecoration of the Great Hall windows – internally and externally – and was a huge undertaking. To successfully complete the
project, scaffolding contractor JFE Attridge knew it would have to overcome a host of operational challenges: the erection and
ACCESS VITAL TO SCHOOL PROJECT
The Meeting House,
Ackworth School NASC member: SAY Scaffolding Ltd Main contractor: William Anelay Ltd
ackworth school was founded in 1779 by John Fothergill on behalf of The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Part of the school’s heritage is the Grade 2 listed Meeting House, which was opened in 1847. Now 164 years later it is in need of significant repair work and a restoration project is under way to make sure it is preserved for future generations of pupils.
Scaffolding access was a very important part of this project and required early consultation with SAY Scaffolding in order to produce a designed scheme that enabled William Anelay’s craftsmen the protection and access they required. Internally SAY constructed a
birdcage scaffold that covered the entire internal plan footprint of the building. Built up to just below
ceiling height and cantilevered over the seating galleries at first floor level, the birdcage allowed access for repairs and redecoration to the original plasterwork.
Externally the scaffolding
scheme involved a designed solution to span the low level parts of the Meeting House that were non load-bearing, in order to support the fully-boarded external
access scaffold to the entire perimeter and temporary roof above. The fully-sheeted scaffold enabled access for the repairs to the external fabric of the building and re-roofing works to be carried out whilst protecting the building from inclement weather. Great care had to be taken
throughout the project to protect the building and minimise the disruption to the school’s pupils.
HERITAGE RENOVATION
dismantling of the scaffold not only had to be completed safely within a tight timescale but, most importantly, the solution had to give due consideration to the historical nature of the building. In order to reach the high level windows on all four sides, JFE Attridge Scaffolding erected a huge birdcage and cantilevered it back out into the window recesses.
The internal scaffolding was
erected and dismantled at night, when the house was closed to the public. The scaffold was erected within the tight timescale set and with minimum disruption to the staff and visitors. Externally scaffold had to be
erected around the perimeter of the Hall with the entire load being transferred back on to the exposed spine walls using a
series of aluminium lattice beams to prevent any damage to the existing slate roofs. Chris Keeler, the estate’s head of maintenance, was thrilled with the work. “The whole scaffold project from initial discussion through to final removal was carried out extremely professionally. It could not have gone any better,” he said.
