Liverpool Central Library NASC member: HT Scaffolding Systems Ltd Main contractor: Shepherd Construction*
liverpool’s central library and Archive is one of the UK’s largest libraries and is home to an extensive collection including many rare and important examples of fine printing and book illustrations. The library is currently undergoing major redevelopment which is the result of a £50m landmark PFI contract between Liverpool City Council, Amber Infrastructure and Shepherd Construction. The scheme is due to be completed in spring 2013. The library’s first building was the William Brown Library and Museum, completed in 1860. The library was extended further with the addition of the Picton Reading Room in 1879 and again with the Hornby Library in 1906. All three buildings are Grade 2 listed. During the war, the library was affected by bomb damage leading to the construction of post war modern interventions in the 1950s and 1970s. HT Scaffolding Systems Ltd
was appointed by Shepherd Construction to provide a full access and temporary roof scaffold. The main contractor’s brief was to provide a scaffold that fully encapsulated the building to allow extensive specialist restoration works to be carried out on the Picton, Hornby & Oak and William Brown libraries. The design had to take into account the fact that very limited physical ties could be
fixed in to the building façade. HT specified the Haki 750 deep beam roll-out roofing system to accommodate the 36-metre clear span – built progressively over the double width heavy duty scaffold on one elevation. The full system was completed with Kadar sheeting fitted progressively as the system was rolled into position using special purpose nylon wheels and specialist heavy duty track system. Twenty-four No 1.65m bays were used to fully cover the roof.
Spine beams of up to 14m spans were installed to support the temporary roof, allowing the adjoining demolition works to be carried out unimpeded. This enabled the main contractor to hit their very tight deadlines.
First class solution The mammoth scheme enabled HT to provide a design which fulfilled very strict scheduling objectives and allowed the company to demonstrate its full range of capabilities.
Dwayne Seymour, managing
director of HT Scaffolding Systems Ltd, said the team is proud to have been able to deliver a first-class scaffold solution to considerable technical and operational challenges. “We believe we have also provided a scaffold with an aesthetically pleasing and acceptable appearance for the city of Liverpool, and feel very humbled to contribute to a project which is an outstanding feature of historical and cultural importance to the Liverpool landscape.” * This contractor has a ‘NASC only’ policy
