HiperLCSH LLC converter IC family boosts efficiency, minimises footprint
Design solutions for design engineers
DIN rail ac-dc power supplies Relec Electronics can supply DIN Rail power supplies from 10 to 960W in output power from stock and at extremely attractive prices. Units are available in single phase, 3-phase and dc input versions with output voltages of 5V, 12V, 24V and 48V as standard. Low profile versions are available that are only 56mm deep (AMR Series) in power ratings of 10W, 24W, 36W, 60W and 100W.
DIN rail dc-dc power supplies
A range of DIN rail brackets and accessories for standard dc-dc converters as well as a range of chassis mounting dc-dc converters with a DIN rail mounting accessory bracket. Special
mounting brackets have been developed to accept a wide range of standard regulated dc-dc converters with 1 or 2 isolated outputs up to 30W for applications requiring DIN rail mounting where a bespoke circuit board is not available.
DIN rail battery chargers A range of DIN rail mounted battery chargers for industrial applications, available with both ac & dc inputs for 12V, 24V, 36V & 48V systems. These provide a low cost solution where battery back-up is required and have all of the features to add external low voltage disconnect relays and contactors to protect your battery.
DIN rail mounting RFI filters
Relec Electronics offer a range of single phase and 3-phase EMC filters designed for DIN rail Mounting. These EMC filters are designed
specifically for mounting on TS35 DIN rails in industrial controlsystems. The FMAB (1-stage and FMBB (2-stage - high attenuation) are suitable for single phase systems, the FMAC
(1-stage) for 3-phase systems and the FMAD series (1-stage) for 3-phase systems with a neutral conductor.
Power Integrations has introduced the HiperLCS family of high-voltage LLC power supply IC. These new ICs are highly intergrated incorporating the controller, high- and low-side drivers, and both MOSFETs into a single package. The device has been designed to offer greater flexibility to help optimise designs either for high efficiency – with a maximum efficiency of better than 97% – or for size, by leveraging high- frequency operation (up to 750 kHz) to minimise transformer size and output capacitor footprint. LLC converters have long been favoured over other high-power topologies for applications such as PCs and server power supplies, TVs and LED, streetlights because of their high efficiency and ability to produce compact power supplies - however, designing with them is difficult. The HiperLCS devices look to address thar challenge by providing all the required functions in a single IC – eliminating up to 30 discrete and passive components in the process – thereby streamlining the design cycle, saving board space, reducing assembly costs, and increasing reliability.
The high switching frequency of HiperLCS devices allows designers to use low-cost SMD ceramic capacitors in the output loop instead of bulky, unreliable electrolytic capacitors, and reduces the size of the magnetics required. It also delivers excellent transformer utilization, with a peak switching frequency of 750 kHz. Power Integrations’ new thermally-efficient, low-profile eSIPe-16C package further contributes to space savings and reduces heat sink size.
HiperLCS devices have two modes of use. For
high-efficiency design, its resonant control circuitry provides very low power loss, allowing designs with efficiency greater than 97% at nominal 66 kHz switching frequency. If cost and size are the determining design criteria, then high switching frequency is preferred. In this latter case, efficiency still remains high – for example, 96% at 250 kHz, the frequency where maximum power is achieved. According to Chris Lee, product marketing
manager at Power Integrations, “Designing LLC converters is a complex task. The biggest challenge is configuring all of the building blocks to eliminate cross conduction and controlling the various parasitic elements. With our new HiperLCS product family, the key components are contained inside a single IC and trimmed during manufacture to optimize the pairing of MOSFETs with drivers. This guarantees reliable and efficient performance for applications such as slim LED- backlit TVs, PC main power, servers, telecoms and networking equipment, LED streetlights, and laser printers. HiperLCS devices enable designs that easily exceed the performance benchmarks set by ENERGY STARN 4.0 and 5.0 and the 80 PLUSP Gold and Platinum PC efficiency standards.”
These HiperLCS devices will also allow users to
improve their designs by setting key circuit parameters, such as dead time and soft start, to provide optimum solutions. The design process is assisted by PI Xlsl, a real-time design and modelling tool that greatly simplifies the job of the power supply designer.

New Ericsson power converters cut time- to-market
Ericsson has introduced two new sixteenth-brick format DC-DC converters that provide designers with quick and reliable board- mounted power solutions, addressing increasing demands for shorter time- to-market. Designed to power 60 to 65W applications, the new PKU4619 and PKU4710
have been designed primarily for telecom and datacom systems and equipment, but are also suitable for use in power industrial, process control, test and many other applications. “As system designs continue their use of

increasingly powerful processors, FPGAs and memories, many traditional 50W applications now require more power to meet new market requirements,” said Patrick Le Fèvre, Marketing and Communication Director of Ericsson Power Modules. “However, many customers prefer to retain previous-generation motherboards and limit upgrades to strategic components, such as processors, memories and power modules. The PKU4619 and PKU4710 meet this need, reducing both cost and time-to-market for developers.” Offering an input voltage range of 36V to
75V, the high-efficiency PKU4619 and PKU4710 provide outputs of 2.5V/25A and 3.3V/20A, delivering output power of 62.5W and 66W, respectively. The new products are ideal for applications such as mini-base-stations and provide customers with a simple solution when
upgrading 50W boards to 60W, or even slightly more. Due to their industry-
standard footprint and height of 8.8mm, the duo can be used in low-profile applications when build height is critical. In addition, the devices’ low profile, combined with high efficiency, makes them highly suitable for
applications with reduced airflow. In a natural convection environment, full power can be delivered up to +40°C and, with a 3.0m/s airflow, up to +80°C.
The PKU4619 and PKU4710 are built on
Ericsson’s robust power-module platform featuring optimised topology and layout, and use a limited number of components for increased reliability, while also making them extremely cost efficient, in fact the new devices offer an MTBF (Mean-Time-Before-Failure) of more than 3.6 million hours, and the PKU4619 and PKU4710 meets safety requirements according to IEC/EN/UL 60950-1, offer input/output isolation of 1500V(dc) with protection features including output-over-voltage protection (OVP), input under-voltage shutdown, over-temperature protection (OTP), and output short circuit protection.
The devices are available in both through-hole (PI version) and surface-mount (SI version) types.
