the russian EOS branch LAS, Laser Association, is one of the founding members of the newest LItc, Laser Innovation and technology center, in the region of Kirow, russia, which specialises in laser surface strengthening. So far, the network of russian-German laser centres

consists of five regional LItcs in Moscow, St Petersburg and the Sverdlovsk, Kaluga and rostov regions. they offer russian industrial enterprises assistance in the practical introduction of innovative laser technologies. In practical terms, this means advising on areas such as technical and economic issues; demonstration of the possibilities of using laser technology; and assistance in establishing contacts with the developers of laser technologies, as well as the producers of laser equipment. the network also offers training of specialists for applications, as well as the safety and development of laser processing technologies for different materials. On average, each LItc provides 10 to 15 testings and consultations per month. Established in 2005, the network is a successful

joint project created within the framework of an intergovernmental russian-German agreement about scientific-technical cooperation in the field of lasers and optical technologies. It is sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and research and supported by various russian economic and scientific administrations. Fitted with varied modern laser equipment from leading German companies, such as trumpf, Jenoptik, rofin, Arnold and LIMO, the locations each have specialisms on areas such as cutting and welding metals, plastics and other non-metallic materials or surface treatment. Five LItcs were launched by the Laser Zentrum Hannover eV (LZH) and LItc St Petersburg

by the bavarian Laser center (bLZ). the LAS joined the EOS – becoming the first russian member – in 2004, consisting of more than 400 individual and 300 corporate members. the second russian society, rOS, joined the EOS in 2009 as an affiliated society. Among them are practically all ‘old’ laser centres of

the former Soviet Union – academic research institutes, state laser design offices and enterprises, industrial laser technology laboratories – and a large part of the new small enterprises and joint-stock companies on the territory of the former USSr, which specialise in laser development and applications and have strengthened themselves during the past five years. Foreign laser companies that are interested in dealing with cIS (commonwealth of Independent States) countries have joined the association as well. corporate and personal members of LAS altogether

today represent today more than 15,000 laser specialists from Armenia, Azerbaijan, belarus, Estonia, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. Seven LAS regional centres are active in russia, with seven more in cIS countries and the baltics.

JEos: rp names Belgian academic as new section editor

the editors of the Journal of the European Optical Society: rapid Publications (JEOS: rP) are pleased to announce the appointment of a new section editor – Dr Geert Morthier. Geert Morthier is both Professor in the Department of Information technology (INtEc) at the University of Ghent in belgium and a member of the staff at the Interuniversity Microelectronics centre (IMEc), which is based in both Ghent and Leuven. Dr Morthier is well-known for his research on semiconductor

lasers – in particular the distributed feedback (DFb) laser that is the vital source of coherent light in large- scale fibre-optical communications systems. His expertise covers both the modelling of optoelectronic devices and components and their characterisation. He has contributed to, and led, several large-scale European research projects, including the on-going HIStOrIc project, which is concerned with the integration of semiconductor microlasers into all-optical photonic logic circuits. Dr Morthier’s

appointment will strengthen JEOS: rP in domains of photonics and optoelectronics, particuarly fibre- optical systems, that continue to grow in scale and importance. the integrated photonic

components on which he is working are likely to find extensive application in near-future systems – and could provide novel interfaces between optics and conventional integrated microelectronics. Dr Morthier’s research is also concerned with rapidly developing new areas of application for integrated photonics.
