Chris Norch Receives Keating Founders’ Freedom Award at Foundry Executive Conference

Copper Workshop Helps Metalcasting Facilities Move Toward No-Lead Goals


As new environmental legislation limits the lead content in castings, especially in water applications, more users are demanding non-lead- ed alloys for other applications. The AFS Copper Alloy Committee (Div. 3) organized a group of metalcasting facilities and copper alloy suppliers

to study the issue of no-lead options and help prepare the copper casting industry for this transition. Their findings were presented at the recent AFS Copper No-Lead Workshop, held Sept. 21 at AFS headquarters in Schaumburg, Ill. Some of the no-lead alternatives discussed were


bismuth alloys, silicon brass alloys, silicon bronze and a new sulfide ad- dition alloy. Te event also covered metallur-


gical and production issues, such as pouring temperatures, gating tech- niques, machining, soldering and plating.
