FLEX: Since you brought it up, we want to ask you about it as there have been rumours for years regarding your surgery. What happened exactly? RC: Way back in 1996, when I was getting ready for the Mr. Olympia, I was doing my squat routine at MetroFlex. I had 585 pounds on the bar and when I went down with the weight, I heard the biggest pop in the world, I didn’t think anything of it and did my full set. At first, I thought it was Brian [Dobson, MetroFlex owner] slapping someone before their set which is pretty normal around MetroFlex. Little did I know I had herniated a disc in my lower back. It’s something I’ve had to deal with every day of my career since then and I am still having to deal with it.


FLEX: So you trained that heavy all of those years and won 8 Mr. Olympia titles with a bad back? RC: Yes sir. No excuses though.


FLEX: Wow, that’s amazing. So after your surgery, you were able to train again? RC: Well, yes and no. After I had my operation, I had to take almost a year off from training to just let my body heal up. Once everything healed, I took it real easy, I mean real easy. I only trained one,
