your linemen: Backbone of the electric system

The 1930s rural electrification push greatly expanded line jobs. Linemen followed the work across the country. It was said they would “boom up” to their next job and so were nicknamed “boomers.” The highly skilled, hazardous nature of the job made it comparatively lucrative. The roving line workers were rowdy but dedicated risk takers who took pride in their work.

L

Chasing jobs ended in the 1950s as household electricity became more commonplace. Linemen were needed to perform maintenance and repairs, allowing those who tired of the travel to settle in an area.

The spirit of those electric line pioneers is still found in today’s linemen. The backbone of the electric system, the linemen build it, maintain it and repair it. As in the early days, they are often hailed as heroes by consumers and communities alike when the lights come on after an outage.

A crafty young entrepreneur ‘All you can drink’ lemonade not so sweet

A

little boy was selling lemonade at a stand. At the front of the stand he had a sign that said LEMONADE 55

CENTS: ALL YOU CAN DRINK. A woman who was passing by

thought about it, and even though the cups the boy stocked at his stand looked small, she decided to buy some lemonade since it was only 55 cents. The boy handed her a cup and filled

it; she drank the entire contents straight down and then held her cup out for a refill. However, the boy firmly shook his head no to her request. “But it says, “All you can drink” on your

sign,” the woman protested. “That’s right,” the boy said.

“And that’s all you can drink.”

inemen initially were associated with the 1840s expansion of the telegraph. The term later was applied to men who worked on telephone lines in the 1870s and the beginnings of electrification in the 1890s.
