How did Aqua Expeditions decide on Peru? I felt there was a gap in the market to create a luxury product for the Peruvian Amazon, focusing on adventure travel, incredible dining, first-class guides and spacious and relaxing accommodation.
How do you address environmental concerns? Contrary to a fixed lodge, we are 100 per cent autonomous and can navigate deep into the river without leaving a trace. We play our part in maintaining and protecting this fragile ecosystem and our boats have low emissions with little noise pollution. We also try and buy locally much of the ingredients used onboard, giving back to the local communities on the Amazon.
What's the uptake been from the UK? Very positive, Brits are avid explorers! Travellers come for more than a week to Peru, so a cruise with Aqua Expeditions can be combined with a visit to Machu Picchu for example. Rates start from £1,609pp for a three-night cruise inclusive of transfers, tours and meals. features its longest ever itinerary and two new ‘suite’ ships to meet demand for luxury European river cruising. The 2012 programme features 36
river cruise itineraries with prices starting from £999 for ‘A Taste of the Danube’. Breaking the record for its longest ever itinerary is Avalon’s 22-night ‘North Sea to the Black Sea’ cruise from Amsterdam through to Bucharest or vice versa. It takes in Germany and Austria on the Rhine and Hungary, Croatia, Serbia and Romania on the Danube. Prices are from £3,745pp, based on a full-board, category E stateroom and including return flights. A selection of new themed cruises
has been added, with lectures on European history and politics as well as Jewish heritage. Festive cruises to see Europe’s Christmas markets have also been added, with four itineraries to choose from, as well as wedding vow renewal packages. Following high demand for the industry’s first ‘suite ship’ Avalon Panorama (launched in May), Avalon Visionary and Avalon Vista are both due for delivery in 2012. Panorama suites (200 sq ft), Royal Suites (300 sq ft) and deluxe staterooms (172 sq ft) will be available on both new ships, with the same 11 ft wall-to-wall panoramic windows that open. New for next year, Royal Suite guests will have access to in-room Apple iPads.
