Over the top (OTT) television and TV Everywhere distribution is ramping up and Internet-based viewing is taking on a stronger presence within the industry. With this increased availability comes increased advertising opportunities. Naturally, this is a plus but it also means greater volumes and file formats to deal with. Unfortunately, many broadcasters do not have a workflow in place to accommodate the increased volume of output. The technologies to aid with these challenges are already available, it’s applying them in the appropriate manner that needs to be addressed. Two of the biggest obstacles when dealing with this increase in volume of content are diminished staff, a norm now at many media outlets, and non-linear workflows that are not truly non-linear. With staff handling multiple positions while still needing to process and distribute thousands of files a day, it is unreasonable to expect someone to man content as it goes through each phase of the workflow. Automation can help combat this depending on how the processes are automated. This goes far beyond the production automation systems that are being used for the dissemination of the finalised content, but into how the content is managed and processed throughout the workflow that preps the file for distribution.


Automation first starts with how we think of our workflows. Many in place today are different software and hardware processers linked together. Though considered non-

linear because these involve software and files, users of this setup are still working in a linear way. Each file must be ingested into each separate software then processed and reingested to go on to the next stage. There needs to be a paradigm shift from asset management being a noun and asset management being a verb. What this means is that asset management needs to deal with organisational strategy and the interconnection of the system with other elements in the workflow. A software that can handle multiple set processes and file processes going on at the same time can really aid to keep files moving through without much human involvement. Under this automation umbrella,


there are many processes which should be integrated to help files move through each phase. This all starts with the sourcing of the content. You want software that can streamline and automate the ingestion process of getting the content into queue for which workflows will be applied.
