Managing large volumes of source material and organising a streamlined workflow from shoot through to post can be a real challenge at the best of times. Multiply this by 100 when the production shoot’s at the biggest studio in Europe, the offline and online edits take place in different cities and the audio treatment is akin to that of a major cinema release. This is the scenario that two leading post houses in Belfast and Dublin were faced with when they set to work on HBO’s epic series, Game of Thrones. Kevin Usher, director of solutions development at Avid, reports.


Raising the end-to-end workflow game


t all started when over 300 cast and crew arrived in Belfast in June 2010. One of the few film studios in the world that could cope with the scale of the production was the eight-acre Paint Hall Studio complex in Belfast, Northern Ireland - and it was there that filming began using Arri Alexa cameras recording on to Sony’s HDCam SR format. HBO then had the task of finding a post- production facility that could cope with the demands of such a high- profile project. In the end they chose to work with

two Irish facilities that Avid has long- standing relationships with - Yellow Moon in Belfast and Screen Scene in Dublin. Yellow Moon provided the offline and dailies service. Working with our elite reseller, Tyrell CCT Ireland, Yellow Moon was able to offer a bespoke post production environment that could be replicated at


HBO’s epic series, Game of Thrones.


the second location 85 miles away at Screen Scene in Dublin. At the backbone of the workflow


was Avid Unity, which integrated seamlessly with the HBO team’s Macs to send the dailies back to the US. Similarly, the team used a Cache-Alto data storage facility for additional archiving which again worked in partnership with the Avid Unity. Yellow Moon brought its wealth of


experience with Avid Media Composer to the project and chose it as its tool for the offline edit. Working with Tyrell CCT, we could offer Yellow Moon the infrastructure and support network to match the scale of the series. In fact Tyrell CCT’s relationships with both the offline and online post houses proved a great bonus. Its experience of working with Yellow Moon in Belfast and Screen Scene in Dublin meant we really could be across the project from beginning to end. Tyrell has a huge


amount of experience in the high-end broadcast environment and realises the importance of having a knowledgeable team that can react quickly - this was very much the case with Game of Thrones. Yellow Moon, Screen Scene, and the


post team from HBO, were involved in designing a bespoke workflow for the project, as well as ensuring it was achievable within the available time frame. As the shoot wrapped in Belfast, all material moved to Screen Scene in Dublin, which was fully prepared for the remaining offline edit, VFX, sound post and picture finishing. Tyrell CCT’s role involved recommissioning edit systems and transferring the Avid Unity and offline data down to Dublin. Screen Scene designed a sound post


workflow using six Avid Pro Tools editing suites, working across dialogue, effects, ADR and music for the sound editorial of the series. When it came to
