ADVICE PREPARATION

Make sure the wall you are wallpapering onto is properly prepared. Wallpaper does not like to stick to shiny surfaces, and it must be flat or you will get little bumps showing. For the very best results use a wallpaper primer sealer.

The product is concentrated to give economical use and is then diluted with water before applying. It primes and seals both porous and non–porous surfaces. And it really can help to eliminate paper hanging problems such as bub- bles, opening seams and curling edges!

READY MIXED – LIGHT GRADE ADHESIVES

There is a misconception that these are the same as packet – “flake” – pastes with water added by the manufacturer for ad- ditional profit. These pastes are water based and ready to use from the tub but are very different. They are usually made us- ing a mix of maize starch, which is less alkaline, and PVA. They have a higher solid content and are, therefore, stronger.

The vast majority of manufacturers of quality wallpapers will recommend the use of this type of adhesive as it will give bet- ter results. It is strong and suitable for wallpaper, vinyls and paste the wall papers.

These light grade ready mixed adhesives are suitable for the majority of wallpaper sold on wallpaperdirect, however, there are a couple of additional pastes for specialist papers.

PREPARED TUB PASTE

Again, a ready mixed adhesive for ease of use, with wheat flour based product which makes it more ph neutral and suitable for delicate hand printed wallpapers, flock, very fine textiles and wallpapers with sensitive ink colourings. It does not contain PVA. This type of adhesive will always be recommended by the supplier, if required.

FINALLY! SPECIALITY ADHESIVES

Again ready mixed, these adhesives have a much higher content of PVA and less water, making them suitable for fabric backed products as they will not shrink textiles.

They are formulated for special types of wallpaper and should only be used when recommended by the supplier. They also contain a fire retardant which makes them suit- able in contract environments.

All of these types of adhesives are available from Albany, as recommended by wallpaperdirect.co.uk, along with various manufacturers own brands. Find them in “wallpapering tools”
