DECORATING YOUR KITCHEN

Good Enough to Eat

How to create a kitchen that is the apple of your eye as well as the heart of the home…

The kitchen often plays a bigger part in our daily lives than we notice, whether it’s breakfast on-the-hop, a cup of tea with friends, gathering together for the evening meal or a Sunday afternoon baking with the family. Give your kitchen a little extra attention and see what a difference it can make to your home!

Sophie Conran, famous cookery writer, kitchen and tableware designer and winner of an Elle Deco Style award told us about what she considers when choosing colours for kitchens and places to eat:

“Colour is a mood enhancer. Rich colours like red, orange and pink create a lively, energetic atmosphere, while greys, greens and blues are calming and can be cold. That is why traditionally red has been the colour of choice for dining rooms,” explains Sophie. “It feels intimate and can be cosy, creating a great mood for jolly dinners of good conversation and cheerfulness.”

“I have a very pink kitchen, which makes me happy as it is hard to feel down in such a vibrant surrounding.”

Sophie’s best advice for your kitchen is simple – “Choose colours you love. Paint a test patch on the wall and live with it for a bit to see how it changes throughout the day as the morning, midday and evening light can make it look quite different.”

If you’d like to follow Sophie’s pink pointers, don’t forget that designerpaint.co.uk has luxury shades from brands such as Designers Guild, Graham & Brown and Albany. For a vibrant feel, we recommend Orchid by Designers Guild. Alternatively Albany’s Perfect Pink is a must for a high fashion statement shade, either for a feature wall or a stunning whole-room colour.

Sophie Conran has designed her very own collection of wallpapers for Arthouse which complements her ‘cosy kitchen’ ideas. The muted floral designs and beautiful faded pastel colours are perfect for creating a traditional country home appearance which is sure to whet your appetite.

Top tips for styling your kitchen from interior stylist, Diana Civil www.dianacivil.com

• The kitchen is fast becoming the hub of the home with people spending increasingly more time there, more so than their dining and living rooms in fact

• Table and chairs are the centre- piece of a kitchen; updating these can completely change its look. Dabble with the hugely popular colour-blocking trend by painting your chairs in clashing bright shades. Top with a couple of coats of gloss for a slick and shiny stand-out look, hugely on-trend - lots of colours to choose from on designerpaint.co.uk

• For an imaginative update, create a bold splashback by putting a bold wallpaper behind a clear glass panel

• Make a cosy corner in your kitchen. A small sofa offset by a feature wall will transform it into an extended living space
