Sticking it up!

Buying wallpaper is the first step and choosing your per- fect colour and design. Step 2 is sticking it up!

Choosing the right adhesive for the job will make the application easier and more importantly, give the best results. Adhesives are, in the main, made from simple modified starches based on potato, maize or wheat or any combina- tion mixed together.

There is no one adhesive suitable for all wallpapers and you need to follow the manufacturer’s advice which will depend on the type of paper and the printing method.

These are some of the types of paste on the market but the manufacturer will usually recommend the type of adhesive to use, so for best results follow their instructions!

So what are the different pastes?

“FLAKE” OR PACKET PASTE

This is the cheapest option and is made from potato starch. It is quick and easy to mix and is available in small 5 roll sachets up to 20 roll boxes. However, because you mix it yourself, the consistency varies and it has the least solid content of all the adhesives and is therefore not so strong. Particular care must be taken not to get this paste on the surface of the paper, as it is high in alkaline, which can cause damage to the face of the paper; the trade calls this “paste atttack”. The adhesive can also break down with heat which is the cause of wallpaper peeling behind radiators.

The high water content makes these adhesives particularly suitable for embossed wallpapers, such as Anaglypta, which need time to soak.

RULES FOR PASTING AND GETTING THE BEST JOB!

The key to pasting your wallpaper is keeping it off the front surface! Paste must be removed as it will, in time, stain. As you hang your wallpaper don’t be frightened to wipe the front of it with a sponge and clean water, to remove any paste residue.

By placing your paper on the furthest edge of your pasting table and pasting away from you, then moving the paper to the nearest edge and pulling your brush or roller towards you, the table stays free from paste! If the label states to soak the paper, soak it! Each length needs to soak for the same amount of time.

Use the same paste for your lining paper as your top paper, as the two adhesives are chemically compatible and will work together! Also, the bond with the lining paper to your wall needs to be as strong as the paper to the lining paper.
