Dear Sisters, It’s begun! We are ready to Step Up ~ Leave
No Veteran Behind! The 2011-2012 year is in full swing, and this month is actually one of the most important. In the July 2011 issue, you read about September Military Suicide Awareness Month. To help bring awareness to this tragedy, we are all wearing the teardrop sticker (available at
www.ladiesauxvfw.org) every day of the month. When someone asks us about it, we’ll tell them how concerned we are and that there is help for those who need it. See Page 20 for a heartbreaking look at one family’s story. Also this month is the 10th anniversary of September 11 and POW/MIA Remembrance Day, September 16. In this issue, you will find the winners of the 2010-2011 Young American
Creative Patriotic Art Contest. Read the descriptions of their art and you will see that they are very aware of the sacrifices made for them. Now is the time to get the new brochure for this contest and take it to local art teachers. Remember, digital art is no longer accepted. To order brochures, call National Headquarters at 816-561-8655. On Page 12, read about the most recent Postdoctoral Research
Fellowship recipient and see the year-end statistics for our Cancer Aid & Research Fund on Pages 10-11. I hope both inspire you to reach for our new Platinum, Gold and Silver Awards being offered to Departments for donating above and beyond! (See Page 5 of the National Program Book.) Also, don’t miss the article about the Veterans History Project. As one
of our initiatives this year and an important part of our country’s history, you will want to know just how to conduct these important interviews. Do you know a veteran with memory loss? We are teaming up with artist
and author Dan Koffman to get his book “Life in the US Military” into the hands of caregivers. Read more about how this picture book helps veterans with memory loss on Page 18. Read General Orders No. 1 on Pages 30-31. In it you will find my Homecoming, which is this month. The second is the very special 125th Anniversary of the Statue of Liberty. This ceremony will be one of the best yet! Under the Resources page on our website, you will find the 2011-2012
Generic Reporting Form, a new reporting tool to make reporting easier for you and your Department. Sisters, thank you for entrusting me with this position, and I cannot
wait to meet you as I travel! Loyally, Gwen Rankin National President 2 LADIES AUXILIARY VFW MAGAZINE
