Second Place $5,000

ARIEL PITRE Sponsored by Auxiliary 8538 Larose, Louisiana

“My artwork represents the

brotherhood made during the times of war between soldiers, and the love a father holds towards children. The bottom section of the artwork is a soldier holding a bleeding child. The child is not his, but he still cares

for the child as his own. The top right section is of a fallen soldier, and a fellow soldier protecting his body. It represents the bond of brotherhood even after death. Then I have the American Flag connecting both pictures. The saying, ‘We fight as brothers. We protect as Fathers,’ explains the entire picture.”

Third Place

$2,500 CARLIN

MORRISON Sponsored by Auxiliary 5978 Nashville, Georgia

“One of the things I wanted to depict in this drawing was that society tends

to forget the men and women who gave their lives in service for our country. What may be just a statistic to everyone else, is a person to the families and friends who still mourn for their loss. When you visit the Vietnam Memorial, it is almost like going to church; everyone is very quiet and respectful. The mementos and items left by the living give you an idea about the people who died in the war. It makes their presence more real. The drawing shows the ghost of a dead soldier, reading one of the many letters his grieving wife leaves at the Memorial. She promises him that she will make sure that their granddaughter knows and realizes the sacrifice that he and the others have made; a lesson that all of us should remember.”
