Electricity 56.0%

Business miles in company

cars 0.7%

Gas 11.3%

Business rail and air travel 0.5%

Other energy: static fuels 1.9%

Water treatment and supply 0.3%

Includes emissions resulting from UK-owned and UK-operated parts of the business, and significant emissions from third-party distribution operated solely for Waitrose. Calculated using Defra and DECC 2010 emission factors, with the exception of those for waste and waste collections, Pure Plant Oil used in distribution, certain refrigerants, and some emissions sources associated with our Leckford farm.

Waitrose and john lewis 2010/11 Emissions, Tonnes CO2e

John Lewis

Scope 1 - 44,737

Scope 2 - 98,736

Scope 3 - 4,349

Total Gross emissions: 147,822

Waitrose

Scope 1 - 155,149

Scope 2 - 195,147

Scope 3 - 43,838

Total Gross emissions: 394,134

2010/11 is the base year for our new carbon reduction target because it is the most recent and comprehensive year of data available. We have included emissions related to water supply, water treatment and other fuels used in our buildings for the first time in 2010/11. We expect our emissions to rise before an absolute reduction is achieved through our reduction initiatives. See our carbon footprint boundary for scope 1, 2 and 3 boundaries.

Transport-relate d CO2e emissions, tonnes per £m sales

John Lewis

2010/11 - 5.73

2009/10 - 5.50

2008/09 - 6.20

Waitrose

2010/11 - 10.92

2009/10 - 10.97

2008/09 - 10.99

During the year a number of factors impacted our performance including bringing frozen food distribution in-house; making more store and home deliveries as our business grows; and increasing backhauling (using our trucks’ return journey from delivering to our shops to collect suppliers’ products). Read about our transport and distribution objectives.

Shop energy efficiency, KWh per square foot of trading floor area

John Lewis

2010/11 - 48.4

2009/10 - 47.7

2008/09 - 50.9

Waitrose

2010/11 - 115.1

2009/10 - 112.8

2008/09 - 116.9

The prolonged cold weather this winter impacted shop energy efficiency through increased heating usage. As a result, shop energy (electricity and gas) use per square foot of trading floor area increased by 2% in Waitrose and 1.5% in John Lewis.

Refrigeration and cooling direct emissions, tonnes CO2e

John Lewis

2010/11 - 1,511

2009/10 - 2,412

2008/09 - 811

Waitrose

2010/11 - 64,398

2009/10 - 78,715

2008/09 - 80,798

Our target is to reduce Waitrose’s refrigeration and cooling direct emissions by 50% by 2012/13 against a 2008/09 baseline. We’ve achieved a 20% reduction so far. Work to improve data capture for John Lewis’ refrigeration and cooling contributed significantly to the increase in reported emissions between 2008/09 and 2009/10.
