2010/11 is the base year for our new carbon reduction target because it is the most recent and comprehensive year of data available. We have included emissions related to water supply, water treatment and other fuels used in our buildings for the first time in 2010/11. During the year a number of factors impacted our performance including bringing frozen food distribution in-house; making more store and home deliveries as our business grows; and increasing backhauling (using our trucks’ return journey from delivering to our shops to collect suppliers’ products). The prolonged cold weather this winter impacted shop energy efficiency through increased heating usage. As a result, shop energy (electricity and gas) use per square foot of trading floor area increased by 2% in Waitrose and 1.5% in John Lewis.

Our target is to reduce Waitrose’s refrigeration and cooling direct emissions by 50% by 2012/13 against a 2008/09 baseline. We’ve achieved a 20% reduction so far. Work to improve data capture for John Lewis’ refrigeration and cooling contributed significantly to the increase in reported emissions between 2008/09 and 2009/10.
