Lowtide During their six-month migration

from Alaska to Hawaii, humpback whales lose up to eight tons of body fat.

reported breaching 130 times in 75 minutes.

The humpback’s flippers are nearly one-third the length of its entire body.

MARITIME TRIVIA BY BRYAN HENRY

A blue whale’s tongue is 10 feet thick and weighs as much as an elephant.

Blue whales eat more than one

million calories of krill (tiny shrimp-like crustaceans) a day.

A blue whale consumes as many

calories during one season of feeding than a human does in a lifetime.

When a blue whale exhales, the air

is released at 300 mph, and the blow or spout can be 35 feet high and 25 feet wide and is visible for several miles.

A newborn blue whale calf measures

23 feet long and can weigh more than two tons - as much as a full-grown elephant.

At six months old, blue whales may

be as much as 50 feet long. Beluga whales use their teeth for

grasping, not chewing, because they swallow food whole.

Beluga whales were nicknamed Boater’s Swap Meet It’s time again to get that box of

stuff out of the garage, empty the lazarette and head to the

48° North Boater’s Swap Meet. Hundreds, even thousands, of your fellow boaters will be there selling

those items that you’ve been yearning for but couldn’t find, and buying those items you’ve stored forever

that someone really needs. It’s a bargain hunter’s paradise. And it’s FREE!

“sea canaries” by fishermen because they emit squeals, chirps, whistles and other sounds.

A beluga can make two completely different sounds simultaneously.

Belugas are not born white but are

gray. Their skin turns white only after reaching adulthood at five to six years old.

In the womb, baby whales have hind legs which disappear before birth.

Dolphins call one another by name, just as people do. Dolphins have no sweat glands and

stay cool by releasing heat through their flippers.

Dolphins have different mates every

season. A dolphin exchanges up to 90

percent of the air in its lungs every time it breathes. Most other mammals, including man, exchange only about 15 percent.

A mother dolphin burps her calf by thumping its belly with her snout.

Dolphins feed at depths of six feet

and can stay submerged for about 15 minutes.

Dolphins can live for more than 50 years.
