Love 48° North, good technical and great racing coverage. Regarding the June 2011, Wilkens’ 48° North article, “Choosing Propane Appliances & Tanks” Any article about keeping warm and dry in our NW sailing area is a good article. We need all the help we can get. We really value the comfort provided by our Dickinson cabin heater during extensive wet off-season cruising. But the flow of air and gases in our “intake/exhaust” deck chimney fitting is different from the one shown in the article. Ours has the intake air come in/down the outside layer of the pipe and the hot gases exhaust up the inside layer (reverse of the diagram in the article). This makes the chimney relatively self-insulating and not as hot to the touch. Another important difference not mentioned by the article, is that these double-wall chimneys also provide a more balanced draft across the burner, reducing any effect that strong winds may have.

Good catch. It seems the drawing is labeled backwards, the cool air is on the outside.
Where’s Jack?
I finally got on the road again, yesterday. Please, check in on the web blog.
“Fleetwood” should get the mast raised again in the next couple of days and finish the last 500 kms of the Danube under sail. I posted more pictures than ever on today’s blog because Rousse, Bulgaria has to be one of the most photo scenic stops on the voyage.
The next part should be exciting, winding through the Danube delta branches into the Black Sea. I expect to be in Istanbul in early August and I will probably spend some time there.
Then stop at some of the Eastern Greece islands before heading through the Turkish archipelago.
