CONTRACT NEWS GLASS CHALLENGE
A fi re detection and alarm system from Gent by Honeywell has been installed in a school in Kent to help meet the demanding fi re protection requirements. In September 2010, St George’s Church of England Foundation School, based in Broadstairs, was offi cially opened as part of the government’s Building Schools for the Future project. The new modernised school boasts vibrant new buildings, refurbished facilities and large open plan spaces. Premier Fire Systems, a Gent 24 Approved System Integrator, was brought in to install a brand new Gent by Honeywell fi re detection and alarm system that would be able to meet the demanding fi re protection requirements of any modern new school building. However, being involved in a brand new state-of-the-art project had its challenges, especially since the school was predominantly open plan and constructed from glass. Premier Fire Systems addressed the acoustic environment and potential reverberations with a fully integrated Gent Vigilon Compact Voice system. This is an integrated fi re detection, voice alarm (VA) and public address (PA) system with background music, all in one panel, which was installed throughout the school. The St George’s School project was a fl agship for the Kent County Council for all future schools.
PARK LIFE
ABB standard drives for HVAC have been installed in a new car park in Sheffi eld to provide greater fan control for the system providing ventilation and fi re safety. The Q-Park car park on Rockingham Street has space for 531 cars over six fl oors. To ventilate the car park of carbon monoxide and ensure that smoke can be vented in the event of fi re, four fans are installed on the main car park ground fl oor. Two fans are used for air movement within the car park and two for extraction, driven by two 1.5kW and two 4.8kW ABB standard drives for HVAC respectively. The other major function of the ABB drives is driving the fans providing smoke extraction in the event of a fi re. In a single level car park, a normal level of air extraction might be six changes an hour, rising to 10 changes an hour in the event of a fi re, with the drive running at full speed. For car parks such as the Rockingham Street car park, six air changes an hour would need to be doubled to 12 changes if a fi re broke out. This is beyond design specifi cation and ineffi cient resulting in wasted energy and more expense in its initial build.

TRAIN SPOTTING
The Severn Valley Railway (SVR), a prominent railway preservation site visited annually by thousands of keen enthusiasts, has improved security at its working engine shed, oil store and boiler shop. Having recently lost a large quantity of high grade copper, used uniquely in the manufacture of the boilers, equally high quality security was essential to prevent further theft of such vital, irreplaceable components. SVR contacted Interface Security Systems to design a solution that was reliable, cost effective and that could overcome a number of diffi cult technical challenges. Interface Security Systems installed Cooper Security’s hybrid
intruder alarm system, the i-on160EX, which is the control unit for a wired/wire free alarm system. The unit can operate up to 160 zones by using expanders that share a single bus cable. The system made it possible to put a backbone cable between the three buildings and ‘hang’ keypads, hard-wired detectors and wireless detectors throughout the site - even where cable access was diffi cult. Installation time was thereby minimised and all work could be carried out during normal working hours without any disruption.
FEELING GOOD
EIC has won a £1m M&E contract at Nuffi eld Health Hospital in Tunbridge Wells.
The Midlands based contractor will be renewing and upgrading the M&E services at the hospital as it undergoes a multi-million pound refurbishment. This win comes after EIC’s successful completion of a contract to refurbish the boiler house at the hospital last year. EIC will be working alongside main contractor ISG Jackson, and the contract will be carried out in phases so the hospital can remain operational throughout, causing minimum disruption to patients and staff during the 49 week programme. Nuffi eld Health Tunbridge Wells Hospital originally opened in 1968 from funds raised by the local community and has established itself as a leading private healthcare provider in the region. The refurbishment, which commenced late last year, is designed to improve the look and feel of the hospital and enhance the patient experience. EIC’s past experience in the health sector includes work for NHS Trusts, Nuffi eld Health, Mercury Healthcare, Bupa, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Trinity Health. More recently, EIC has carried out work for the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, Southampton General Hospital and Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge.
