New Edition of Pipemakers Book Reveals Murder in theWorkshop

requests I had received over the years for information on various makers and because there was very little already in print on this subject. Makers from the earliest known to the modern era were covered, some of them famous names and others almost unknown. Dates and locations were given, with information on the people involved in each

firm. Also were
biographical accounts of the famous pipers employed
by, or
associated with, the firms. Where possible pictures
of
instruments were included, as were illustrations
of
catalogues and price lists showing the range of instruments
available.There was a cut-off date of 1960 so firms starting up after this date were not included unless they had a connection with an earlier business. As many of these firms are still in business it would be unfair, perhaps, to publish more on one than another, and in any case information on the present day makers is freely available on their own web sites.

A primary source of information
was Post Office Directories, available from the late 18th century onwards, which gave names and addresses of businesses
in each town. This
information could be followed up in the census records, parish registers, statutory registers and other archives. Old newspapers often provided further
and some interesting stories. Back numbers of the PT and the Museum of Piping collections
of
instruments, books, magazines newspaper
and cuttings
were another valuable source of information. The first edition of
the book came out in 2001 and was sold out within five years. Interest in this subject seems to be increasing and demand for copies
has continued since then, hence the need for a second edition. I have even been told recently that the help page of the Sunday Post newspaper had an enquiry for a copy of the first edition. In the intervening years I had
continued to research into this topic, discovering even more previously unknown makers and adding a lot of information about other makers. Among the 25 new makers added are
