Opinion
ask the Gold Medal judges at the Argyllshire Gathering to make the selection, based on performances in that competition. It was also agreed that a certain amount of discretion should be afforded to the judges in their selection in order to ensure that minor lapses in otherwise excellent performances, which might normally preclude them from prize-lists,would not count against them in qualifying for the Northern Meeting. In other words, the judges would choose those whom they deemed most worthy in terms of their overall performances. Discussions will continue between the major competition organisers, the
judges and the CPA in order to find a solution which meets the aspirations of competitors while taking into consideration the interests of judges and audiences and the practical organisation of competitions. Perhaps qualifying competitions should be held at both Gold and Silver Medal levels; perhaps a more rigorous analysis of competitive track records would be possible. Whatever the outcome,we will strive to uphold the standards and traditions of the Northern Meeting in providing excellent competitive opportunities for the best pipers and enjoyable listening for judges and audiences.
