Haiti is recovering from the earthquake that devastated the country on January 12, 2010, killing over 230,000 people while injuring another 300,000. Although a tremendous amount of reconstruction remains to be done, there has been much accomplished since.
No one in Port-au-Prince was spared by the earthquake. The YMCA’s Konbit youth centre was destroyed, but fortunately, none of the children and youth inside the building were seriously hurt. On January 15, the World Alliance of YMCAs launched a call to aid for the people of Haiti and its YMCA; a call that The YMCAs
of Québec responded to. As of December 31, 2010, close to half a million dollars had been raised by YMCAs around the world, $78,336 of which came from Canadian YMCAs. These funds were used to support the emergency interventions necessary to meet the pressing needs of the communities and to help with the reconstruction of the Konbit centre.
➢ Equal opportunity, an issue at the heart of the Y’s involvement in Nicaragua
➢ Project raising awareness on the issues of violence against women, funded by the Québec International Development Program
edition of the International Youth Exchange program for youth aged 16-18 years
YMCA of Mexico (partner since 2004) ➢ Paired with the Association Services of The YMCAs of Québec ➢ Staff and volunteer exchanges through programs such as Mano a Mano and Camp Y Kanawana
YMCA of haiti (partner since 2002) ➢ Paired with Camp Y Kanawana and the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Y centre
Despite the precarious situation of the YMCA in Haiti and its staff, the literacy program continued to welcome over a hundred adults in order to teach them how to read and write. Programs such as homework help and tennis lessons were able to continue. The YMCA, its staff, and volunteers took part in the distribution of food and the collection of clothes, and offered its fitness and recreation activities to children affected by the earthquake. As for the containers that helped transport
materials needed for the reconstruction of the Konbit centre in downtown Port-au-Prince, they will be transformed into a new activity centre in another neighbourhood.
➢ Long-standing issues: poverty, lack of education, and marginalization ➢ Programs: reading club, homework help, English classes,
fitness activities, dance lessons, group discussions, HIV/AIDS prevention, and leadership training
On August 29, approximately eight months after the disaster, the new YMCA centre was officially opened. It was the first public building destroyed by the earthquake to have been rebuilt in Haiti, and Haiti’s first green building able to resist earthquakes and tornados.
Today, activities at the YMCA of Haiti have resumed in full.
In 2009, the YMCA of Greater Montréal became The YMCAs of Québec to represent our objective to provide services to more people in more communities throughout Québec.
