it’s up to us to change the rules of the game! The YMCAs of Québec created a travelling exhibition to shed light on the human rights violations in the toy industry. This exhibition is aimed at informing others and getting people to question our economic development model and its social and environmental impacts. It also offers many alternatives in regards to responsible consumption and respect for human rights. The exhibition, created as a result of the No to Sexist and Violent Toys Campaign launched in 2009, has been making its way around the province since September.

no to violence against women How can we help decrease violence against women abroad? The Québec International Development Program, in collaboration with the ACJ/YMCA of Nicaragua, established a series of innovative strategies. First step: raise the awareness of local non- governmental organizations on the issue of violence against women, on existing laws, and legal concerns. Second step: create a front-line community network that is able to inform the population, care for victims, and refer incidents of violence to the authorities.

mano a mano: breaking down borders Many young Latin-Americans, Mexicans in particular, want to cross the border into the United States in search of the “American Dream”. While some may succeed, many fail. Mano a Mano sin Fronteras is an exchange project between the YMCAs of Canada, of the United States, and of Mex- ico, which is aimed at raising the awareness of youth on this issue. The program includes workshops, a forum, a tour of the Mexico - U.S.A. border region, and an internship at a refugee shelter. Three Canadian youth participated in this exchange in 2010.

70 youth aged 12 to 18 took part in the You and Me against AIDS event at the Montreal Science Centre and formed a human ribbon to show their commitment to the fight against this disease.

Delegates from The YMCAs of Québec headed to Hong Kong to participate in the quadrennial World Alliance of YMCAs General Assembly where over 1,000 people from 80 countries gathered to help position the YMCA as a key youth movement.

collaboration and development plans for the ymcAs in the Atlantic region The YMCA Canada East Management Resource Centre was hard at work in 2010 strengthening the collaboration between the YMCAs in the Atlantic region. This resulted in the sharing of human resources and common projects such as the partnership with the YMCA of Honduras and the monthly meetings of the Nova Scotia YMCAs regarding their provincial positioning and governmental relations. In addition, significant development planning was carried out with regard to the rebuilding, renovation, or expansion of several YMCA centres. There is even talk of opening a brand new centre in Nova Scotia.

During the 1970s, the YMCA opened up daycares, preschool programs, and after-school programs to meet the changing needs of families.
