opens its first German multi-brand Josef Seibel & Friends stores in Dortmund, Germany and Leicester
The Josef Seibel Group, which recently made a big move into the retail
sector with the acquisition of a major stake in the Bahner/Leiser group of Germany, has opened its first German multi-brand Josef Seibel & Friends stores in Dortmund, Germany and Leicester, UK. Besides its own brands, Josef Seibel and Romika, the stores also carry others such as Gabor, Paul Green, Marc and Birkenstock. The group has, up until now, been running similar stores only outsides its home market with four stores in Moscow. Jennie Petchey, Brand Development Manager for the Josef Seibel Group in the UK reports “The Josef Seibel & Friends multi brand format allows us to fill gaps in our wholesale distribution in order to sell Josef Seibel and Romika branded product complemented by other quality German brands. It is an extension to our current comprehensive wholesale distribution.” Within the UK, the Josef Seibel group currently operates a standalone
store in Covent Garden, London; two factory stores to facilitate the sale of discontinued lines; a store situated on an American Airforce Base in Lakenheath, Suffolk and now the addition of the Josef Seibel & Friends concept.
Jennie adds, “The UK and Irish business has continued to support its
wholesale customer base with a comprehensive instock service. When necessary we have to take remaining stock to the market place in a way that has minimal impact on our full price distribution whilst not being a cost to the business. Carefully selected locations for our factory stores allows us to do this.” It is planned that once the Josef Seibel & Friends model is running
successfully, up to a further ten stores will be opened in the next five years under either a franchise option or by the Josef Seibel Group in the UK to complement its current stockists.
Cartel law prevents Wortmann from participating in Salamander
Langenfeld/Detmold, 24 may 2011 – the ara-Group, Langenfeld, and
Wortmann-Group. Detmold, both of whom are considered to be among the leading shoe manufacturers in Europe, have announced that the planned joint-venture with Salamander will not be possible. This was in part owing to serious concerns regarding cartel law considerations. Both companies have come to the conclusion that the preconditions required for this kind of joint venture, so as to ensure its compliance with competition law, would pose a barrier too high to ensure the successful business future of the company. In the course of the negotiations, which were conducted for a period
spanning more than one year, the parties were successful in finding an agreement on all other points. Merely the requirements posed by cartel law, which have become increasingly stringent particularly in the recent past, led both companies to conclude that the best decision would be to now longer continue with this joint project. In the meantime, the joint-venture undertakings of the partners, which apart hereof also compete with one another, are now subject to compliance with extremely high requirements. What is more, particularly with a view to the recent decisions made by the Federal Cartel Office, this would pose a problem for the planned joint venture, which could only be complied with successfully with great difficulty. In addition to this, the cartel office is not obliged to issue a release statement with protection of legitimate expectation, despite disclosure of all contractual agreements. Therefore, as no legal certainty exists, the potential risks that could be incurred by both companies are considered highly unpredictable, which ultimately led to this decision being taken.
