PROCUREMENT

Stanley Healthcare outline how their automated inventory management solutions helped the Catheterisation Lab at Glenfi eld Hospital save almost £1,000 per day.

or many of those who have chosen to pursue careers in the healthcare indus-

try, the wellbeing of patients and the ability to provide quality care remain the obvious top priorities.

Care-giving is inherent in the many levels and sectors of any healthcare service. There is the steadfast expectation that patients and residents remain the primary concern, secondary to any form of institutional prof- it or personal gain for employees. Howev- er, because these principles of care-giving must take precedence in any healthcare facility, a certain level of effi ciency and or- ganisation is necessary in order to deliver excellent patient care.

Practices such as patient registration and inventory management are certainly essen- tial in any healthcare department. Howev- er, such activities run the risk of preventing staff members from acting with the kind of responsiveness and fervent support that their patients and residents deserve.

In the advent of an age that has thus far thrived on the accuracy of automation, healthcare industry leaders have turned their attentions to providing technologi- cal solutions that streamline and manage these necessary processes. With the devel- opment of web-based supply management software, care-giving staff members are given the opportunity to adjust their focus to providing the most quality treatment possible. These programs aim to reduce time spent on direct inventory manage- ment activities by allowing departments to have access to a continuously maintained, professional item database. Product per-

formance, item waste and documentation of patient registration and outcome are constantly monitored through the software and can be accessed via internet connec- tion throughout the facility.

Eliminating error

Keeping in mind that it is always a primary goal of any healthcare institution to deliver the best quality of care at the lowest cost, these software systems integrate a real- time feature when ordering, organising and cataloguing inventory and treatment items. A real-time update informs all service de- partments of the actual supply need in the organisation, even factoring in for inevita- ble emergency orders.

This particular element eliminates the risk of human error that is can occur when or- dering and inventory-related tasks are car- ried out manually.

Automated supply management offers complete order management with optimal effi ciency and item traceability that greatly reduces the possibility of ordering excess or incorrect supplies. Investing in inven- tory management software has the poten- tial to propel a healthcare institution into a realm of ultimate cost-effi ciency, reducing department storage space and unnecessary stock.

Decrease

Within a year of the Catheterisation Lab at Glenfi eld Hospital at the University Hospital of Leicester investing in a web-based supply management system

developed by Stanley Healthcare Solutions (SHS) in September 2009, the department had decreased its inventory wastage by 43%, as well as its inventory volume.

Annual purchase volume was lowered by almost 15%, and ultimately, general inventory costs were reduced across-the- board at the facility.

The lab accumulated an average of £973 in savings per day after subscribing to the software, and calculations project that dur- ing the next two years, the software will save the facility an average of £84 per day.

“This product has the potential to free up labour resources, such as nurses and other staff directly involved with patient care by up to 60%,” stated Sif Nielsen of SHS. “Not only is there clear economic value in imple- menting an automated inventory manage- ment system in any healthcare facility, but patients are further guaranteed the best quality care and the utmost attention from caregivers when the staff can be unencum- bered by inventory-related activities.”

With the comprehensive services offered by automated inventory management sys- tems, care-giving staff members are able to quickly and easily collect and record necessary statistical information regarding patient registration and item catalogues, enforcing a reputation of effi ciency and un- deniable quality at their facilities.
