WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS
In a hospital environment, time is a precious commodity, argues Ascom.

uicker responses, accu- rate information and clear communication are all essential aspects of a patient’s treatment. The healthcare industry has led the way in adopting wireless voice communication; doctors, nurses and administrative staff are con- stantly on the move and it is im- portant that they can be reached when needed and have the ability to communicate with each other.
In the past hospitals have used paging systems amongst nurses, DECT (digital enhanced cordless telecommunications) systems for staff protection on individual wards, radios for security staff and mobile phones for doctors. These different platforms add up to a very costly way of communi- cating. This is why more hospitals are attaching wireless communi- cation devices on to their existing wireless network, eliminating the need for different communication infrastructures.
Kirsty Duncan from Ascom Wireless Solutions explains how more and more commonly, trusts are asking hospitals to justify why they need a site-wide wireless infrastructure.
She said: “I have worked along- side hospitals to help them jus- tify how cost-effective a wireless infrastructure can be and help them build a business case for it.
We illustrate how by having one platform and attaching various devices, such as Ascom wireless phones, helping to reduce costs by cutting the number of devices, which are costly to support. They feel reassured as they know we can provide them with VoWiFi phones which offer an all-in-one solution to their previous multiple devices.”
By using VoWiFi, hospitals are able to deploy an on-site wire- less voice communication system across their wireless data net- work, allowing staff to remain mobile whilst retaining the flex- ibility they would have if making calls from their desk. This enables staff to accept a patient’s call no matter where they are and speak directly with the patient to assess their needs.
The future of VoWiFi looks prom- ising in hospitals, especially when wireless communication special- ists like Ascom are creating prod- ucts and solutions which can be fully integrated in to existing third party systems, hospitals are reap- ing the benefits of recapturing clinician time, enhanced commu- nication and increased staff and patient satisfaction.
