Motor manufacturer Peugeot highlights the steps that can be taken to counter the panic at the pumps.


sk anyone in business about where they’re feeling the pinch in the cur- rent economic climate and it probably won’t be long before fuel prices begin to dominate the conversation.

In fact, recent research from GE Capital Fleet Services revealed that 31% of fl eet managers felt that fuel costs were the most important issue currently on their agenda, overtaking other key concerns such as fl eet safety and risk management.


At the time of writing, average fuel prices stand at over 136p per litre for unleaded and 141p for diesel. Just four years ago, the average price of unleaded fuel stood at 95p, so it’s no wonder that this issue has now hit the top of the business agenda – and it won’t disappear any time soon. When asked what the biggest issue would be for fl eet managers a year from now, concerns about fuel costs rose to 47% among the same people questioned.


Of course, there are options available for fl eets to mitigate their spend on fuel, which include fi nding greater effi ciencies in how organisations manage their transport solu- tions – for example, cutting down non-es- sential travel and improving remote video- conferencing or Skype meeting capabili- ties. Fuel cards also present an increasingly

popular and cost-effective way to monitor and manage fl eets’ fuel consumption.


However, at a time when public sector cuts may actually mean that managers could fi nd themselves with increased geographi- cal responsibility – and therefore increased personal annual mileage – perhaps the fi rst solution to consider is the effi ciency of the vehicles actually being driven.


Peugeot’s 207 OXYGO tackles the dual challenge of improving fuel consumption and lowering fl eet emissions head-on. Us- ing a combination of effi cient engine tech- nologies, energy saver tyres and specially designed aerodynamic styling such as a rear spoiler and adjusted wheel trims, the 207 OXYGO 1.6 HDi FAP not only manages to drive CO2 emissions down to just 98g/ km, but also delivers fuel consumption of 74.3mpg in combined cycle.


With no Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) to pay and exemption from the London congestion charge, too, the business case builds further – and all without compromising levels of comfort, convenience and interior styling.


Beyond the engine technology that the 207 OXYGO employs to increase fuel effi ciency, lower fl eet emissions and effectively con- trol Benefi t In Kind tax bills, the issue of


safety remains at the heart of the vehicle – something that will always remain a prior- ity, whatever the economic climate.


Through Peugeot’s ESP (Electronic Stabil- ity Programme) technology, which comes as standard on the model, the 207 employs an active safety system that uses sensor technology to keep the car stable and help counteract skidding on uneven or icy road surfaces. When approaching challenging driving conditions, ESP sensors connected to the anti-lock brake and traction con- trol systems can instantly reduce engine power and enable smooth cornering, help- ing drivers counteract sliding or skidding. Combined with Smart Airbags, ABS and electronic traction control, this technol- ogy provides added peace of mind for fl eet managers and drivers alike.


There’s no doubt that these are testing times for UK business. And, while the fuel price saga will no doubt continue to twist and turn in the coming months, the 207 OXYGO clearly demonstrates Peugeot’s fi rm focus on helping organisations com- bat the motoring challenges of today, and those in years to come.
