SINGAPORE CHANGI is now connected directly to the South American continent for the first time after Singapore Airlines inaugurated a three times a week B777 service to São Paulo via Barcelona on 28 March.


IN FEBRUARY, German carrier airberlin flew all the musicians and instruments of the renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra to the US on an A330 service at the start of a tour of the US, Canada and Mexico. The shipment was arranged by Düsseldorf-headquartered Leisure Cargo.


KOREAN AIR Cargo is to launch twice-weekly B747-400 freighter services between Seoul and St Petersburg, returning via Frankfurt.


RUSSIAN flag-carrier Aeroflot has ordered eight ‘freight-friendly’ B777 aircraft. It intends to use the six B777-300ERs and two B777-200ERs on existing routes as well as new ones, in particular to Cancún, Sanyu, Ho Chi Minh City, Guangzhou, Mumbai, Toronto, Kuala Lumpur, San Francisco and Singapore.


DUBAI INTERNATIONAL airport handled 156,259 tonnes of international air freight in February, down by 9 percent compared to 2010. February freight growth was affected by a decline in Asian traffic as well as by some flight disruptions in the Middle East.


FedEx expands in Suzhou


FEDEX EXPRESS, the express services wing of Memphis-headquartered FedEx Corp, has continued to expand its footprint in China, opening a new handling facility in Suzhou, Jiangsu province. Covering 2,230m2


, the station will process international express shipments in the city


of Suzhou. It incorporates both an office and a warehouse, the latter being able to process up to 3,000 shipments an hour. Audrey Chong, FedEx China’s managing director of operations, international service,


commented: “FedEx is committed to growing with the local Suzhou market by continually investing in its operations and improving our service offerings to meet local demands. “The new station will strengthen our operations capabilities and flexibility to support


FedEx business growth in Suzhou and east China.” This facility is the latest effort made by FedEx to further develop its offering in the


region. The integrator began flying a B777 freighter into Shanghai in January last year. It opened its first branch in the city in 2003 and FedEx now serves Suzhou through the handling capacity of two international express stations as well as one domestic service station.


STL is building for the future
