Selling: Protection
A Shock to the system
SGB Sportsfinds out what Shock Doctor is doing to keep athletes safe, and showcases a selection of its products.
S
hock Doctor claims to be the ‘worldwide market leader and creator of innovative, unique performance-driven sports protection’ and to lead the way with ‘innovative, shock absorbing, superior fitting self-custom mouthguards’.
Its mouthguard range is supported by a comprehensive line of protection products for sports such as hockey, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, martial arts and boxing, and lacrosse. “Our belief in the power of technology and design is unwavering,” it says. “When we’re not out playing sports, we’re out scouring the globe for new ways of combining technology and design to make protection and performance one in the same. “We meet engineers and scientists. We search for new materials. We build a deeper team of experts who share similar passions. And we find inspiration in places no other sport brand thinks to look. “If we’re not finding new ways to use a partner’s patented technology, we’re developing our own.

The way we see it, each of our patents brings a million victories against injury for athletes around the globe.”
The line-up of technologies Shock Doctor includes are those such as: CrushTech, a moulded polymer with multiple clusters of juxtaposed twin- hemispheres that act like interlocking springs to absorb up to or more than 30 per cent more shock than a traditional foam pad of equal thickness; Impact Shield, which uses multiple components of differing densities to manage and disperse shock; Heart-Gard, which is constructed from two layers of composite plastic on a base of shock absorbing material to deflect blows to the sternum and chest to spread the impact load across a wider area; and ShockSkin, a protective baselayer featuring a patented system of integrated fabric and foam that moves like a second skin.
These are integrated into a variety of sports protection equipment, from cups and supports, impact kit and chin straps to mouthguards and the
ShockSkin baselayer range.
Shock Doctor is probably best-known for its range of mouthguards though, and they also incorporate a range of bespoke technologies, such as monocoque shock frames that provide a stable foundation that helps shield teeth and protects the jaw against injury. The frames also have a vertical wall extension to limit lateral jaw movement caused by side impacts.
Its mouthguard range also features: shock transfer cores, which direct impact away from vulnerable front teeth to stronger triple-rooted molars; exoskeletal shock frames, providing impact protection for the teeth, jaw and brain in a triple- layer design; and Gel-Fit liners, which take an exact impression of the teeth to provide a tight, comfortable fit.
Shock Doctor is present in the UK through Hy- Pro, which carries a range of its mouthguards and protective equipment suitable for a variety of sports.
