Rapid response delivers bespoke classrooms in weeks

ffsite construction specialist Terrapin has created a rapid response solution that addresses the demand in the market for cost effective, turnaround of classroom buildings.
Fully equipped, permanent, modular classroom units can be built to a bespoke design within less than two months and supplied to BREEAM Excellent rating where required, which includes the inclusion of renewable technologies.
The London Borough of Bexley recently put the service to the test when it specified three permanent Unitrex classroom units for two primary schools which were urgently needed to meet the demand for expanding pupil numbers. The units were designed and built, delivered and commissioned within a few weeks.
Terrapin’s Unitrex system uses standardised system components that are delivered to site in a flat-pack configuration. The panels are particularly suited to projects where there is restricted site access, while enabling the creation of a weathertight seal to the permanent building within three days.

Extended performance door sets for design college
T
he Ravensbourne digital media and design college designed by Foreign Office Architects and DEGW is a structure which encourages collaboration between different disciplines: open spaces and quiet corners, social spaces, technology hubs, design studios and production suites.
A total of 367 doorsets from Leaderflush Shapland’s Designer and Extended Performance ranges were specified to achieve prolonged fire resistance levels of up to 120 minutes; and Extended Performance Acoustic Audiodor door sets to achieve sound reduction levels of 44RwdB.
Green technologies have been built into the fabric of the building which has used environmentally friendly construction materials such as FSC timber and re-used aggregates.
Along with a green roof, solar hot water and a biomass boiler, EnduraCor has helped contribute to the Ravensbourne achieving a BREEAM Excellent status. Manufactured using mainly man-made materials or those which are either FSC or verified, legal and sustainable, this cost-effective solution could significantly reduce ‘whole life’ repair and maintenance costs.

nauf AMF Ceilings were recently specified to help meet complex acoustic requirements within the new 308-seat Large Lecture Theatre at Bournemouth University’s Kimmeridge House facility. A sophisticated processing system has been installed that allows the reverberation in the theatre to be adjusted to suit the specific situation, whether short reverberation times for lectures or longer reverberation times for musical concerts. With such high-tech equipment, it was essential that the ceiling system would work effectively to enhance the variable acoustics. Knauf AMF Thermatex Alpha ceiling tiles were chosen as they provide Class A sound absorption. They are lightweight and have a strong, white surface giving a smooth, elegant appearance. Alongside this, 20 Knauf AMF Soundmosaic tiles were also installed.
The Knauf AMF Soundmosaic is a flat-panel loudspeaker in a modular ceiling format that works on the principle of wave conversion, meaning the mineral fibre ceiling tile itself is the loudspeaker. The oscillation is produced by a module on the reverse of the tile, which looks identical to the rest of the Knauf AMF ceiling. Soundmosaic is available in all Thermatex face patterns.
