ith budgets tightening and severe cuts being made across the board - 2011 promises to be educational facilities’ toughest year yet.

According to figures published by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce), teaching budgets alone will be cut by £342m by the end of the 2011/12 academic year. £1 billion by 2011/2012 – but they now, more than ever, need to attract new students to their campuses with inviting, contemporary, stunning and creative learning and living environments that will keep looking great for years to come. This is especially true for flooring. Walked on by millions of feet every year, whether those feet are stiletto heeled, caked in mud or wet with snow - flooring has a number of duties to fulfil. Not only does it have to be practical and safe, but it also needs to create a welcoming and inspirational environment through its design. Carpet has proved to be a highly cost effective

way to create stunning flooring for many years to come, with added benefits such as anti-slip and thermal properties, it’s ten times more effective at reducing background noise compared to other flooring options – making it an ideal floor for a learning environment.

School’s Success in Supacord Competition L

ast year carpet manufacturer Heckmondwike FB launched a national schools competition for the chance for a school to win 10 classrooms of carpet – plus a whole host of other prizes and runners up prizes. Top of the class was an independent Steiner school based in York. The small, independently run school, which was picked at random, was delighted to scoop the top prize which included 10 classrooms of Supacord flooring, a commercial SEBO vacuum cleaner and a Prochem Cleaning Kit. The school is set-up as a charitable organisation – so was delighted to win new carpet for 10 of its classrooms, as

funds are usually allocated to enhancing a childs’ learning experience, rather than spent on fixtures and fittings.

Taking second prize of three classrooms of Supacord carpets, the commercial SEBO vacuum cleaner and Prochem Cleaning Kit was comprehensive secondary school, Woking High School. The school, which currently has 1200 students, achieved Specialist Technology status in 2004 and has gone from strength to strength ever since. The schools’ ethos is built on a strong sense of belonging, designed to build ownership and helps students to take pride in their surroundings and environment.
