IN BRIEF  The Philippine government has unveiled plans to strengthen its coffee industry. At the first Philippine Coffee Investors Forum in Makati City, the Department of Agriculture said it is co- ordinating with a number of agencies to help Filipino coffee growers with ini- tiatives such as tax incentives, financ- ing schemes and technical training.

 Coffidential reports that a recent study conducted by researchers at the University of São Paulo (USP) demon- strated that it is possible to produce biodiesel with oils extracted from waste coffee grounds. One kilogram (2.2 lb) of coffee grounds can gener- ate 100ml (3.5oz) of oil and 12 (0.4oz) ml of biodiesel. Considering that Brazil consumes around 18 million coffee bags (1.08 million tons) per year, the amount of biodiesel that could be pro- duced is significant.

The latest Swedish study confirms that drinking coffee can protect against Type 2 diabetes

in the fight against diabetes. It is believed that the protective benefits

from coffee may be due to its high concen- tration of antioxidants. The scientists at the Karolinska Institute, whose work has been published in the jour-

nal Stroke, examined the health records of 35,000 women aged between 49 and 83 over a 10-year period, revealing that those who drank one or more cups of coffee per day were up to 25 per cent less likely than women who drink less than a cup each day to have a stroke. Researcher Susanna Larsson, said that for

reducing stroke risk, "although the most appropriate amount of coffee per day is still uncertain, it seems that drinking about one to five cups a day is appropriate." Previous research in 2008 from the same

institute has suggested that men also receive a similar benefit from coffee.
