Latham & Watkins secures Wilson Sonsini six


Six IP litigation partners have joined Latham & Watkins LLP in San Francisco and Silicon Valley, the firm announced in April.


Gowlings grabs Unilever counsel


Canadian law firm Gowlings Lafleur Henderson LLP has snapped up Unilever’s former vice president legal and global anti-counterfeiting counsel, the firm announced in April.


Richard Heath joins Gowlings’ London office as a senior policy advisor in intellectual property.

Heath retired from Unilever in 2010. He worked as a private sector consultant specialising


in international brand protection before joining Gowlings on April 1.

Roger Chin, Richard Frenkel, Julie Holloway, Terry Kearney, Michael Ladra and Ron Shulman join the firm from Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.


Chin and Holloway will be based in Latham & Watkins’ San Francisco office, while Frenkel, Kearney, Ladra and Shulman will be based in its Silicon Valley office.


Frenkel previously served as the director of intellectual property for consumer and emerging technologies at Cisco Systems, where he managed patent litigation, advised on patent assertions and purchasing, negotiated patent licences and provided counselling on IP strategy.

Shulman served as a member of the US District Court for the Northern District of California’s Attorney Advisory Committee. Tis was established to draſt local rules for the administration of patent infringement actions in the district.


“Te market for IP litigation continues to be strong,” said Bob Steinberg, the global co-chair of the Latham & Watkins’ IP litigation practice. “[T]his group of partners will add substantially to our reputation by helping us serve leading companies with their most challenging cases.”

Heath was head of corporate and general trademarks counsel in a previous role at Unilever, overseeing its trademark portfolio. Heath worked at healthcare company Smith & Nephew before joining Unilever, where he was head of trademarks.

Fish & Richardson names new litigation practice leader


Fish & Richardson PC has made Ann Cathcart Chaplin the leader of its litigation practice group, the firm announced in March.

Cathcart Chaplin, who is managing principle of Fish &


Richardson’s Twin Cities office, will be responsible for the business and marketing strategies of a group that has nearly 200 patent and commercial litigation lawyers worldwide.


Cathcart Chaplin takes over from Katherine Lutton—a principle based in the firm’s Silicon Valley office—who has led the litigation practice group for four years.


Lutton is leaving the firm’s management to practice patent litigation full-time.


Cathcart Chaplin was made managing principle of Fish & Richardson’s Twin Cities office in 2010. She has also served as a co-group leader of the litigation practice group in the Twin Cities for three years.


“Lutton has done a great job for the litigation group and the firm and I intend to build on her success,” said Cathcart Chaplin. “I look forward to continuing to enhance our reputation in the marketplace as the leading IP and litigation firm in the country.”
