Industry: Cycling In tandem

Two international cycling shows are to descend on Germany in the next few months: EuroBike and Bike Expo.

EuroBike in the saddle EuroBike celebrates its 20th birthday on August 31 – September 3 in Friedrichshafen. The show is set to exceed the record 1,100 exhibitors present last year, and is open to the trade for all four days and the public on the last. Last year, more than 41,000 trade visitors attend the show, over double the number who’d attended a decade earlier. Some 22,307 members of the public walked through the doors on the open day.

The show itself is made up of representatives from every facet of the cycling industry, from bike manufacturers, tyre makers and textile names to accessories specialists and spare part suppliers, who attend from around the world.

For instance, last year attracted the likes of internationally renowned brands Shimano and Michelin; bikes and parts specialists Alutech, Porterbike, Merida, Specialized Europe and Puma Bikes; and textile firms X-Bionic, Gore Bike Wear, Skins and Odlo.

Many of those exhibiting give a glowing reference to EuroBike. Christian Scheffold, regional manager for Skins in Central Europe, said: “[Hall B5] lives up to the trade show's promise of consolidating all premium textile manufacturers at a single location and offers a real advantage for visitors and exhibitors. “We've increased the visitor frequency at our stand by 100 per cent compared to 2009. This has led to a great many important new contacts and orders. We intend to show a real presence in this hall again in 2011 with an even larger stand area.”

Peter Sontheimer, Vaude product manager, said: “We had great visitor frequencies at the stand [last year] and our new collections received an enthusiastic response in all product areas.” Jörg Malcherek, head of marketing at Continental, said: “EuroBike is the greatest trade show in the world. We advise all our customers to come here to get a complete overview.”

Demo Day

EuroBike’s demo day takes place on August 30, when members of the trade can take a sneak peek at the latest products on the market before the show starts. More than 100 international exhibitors are scheduled to preview bikes at the demo day.

international cycling tradeshow arena, having launched in 2009. Taking place in

Munich over four days on July 21-24, Bike Expo is open to both the trade and public, with two days set aside for each.

As such, it describes itself as a ‘combination trade fair and event’, with a 50,000 sq m open-air exhibition ground.

The show has four main themes for visitors, taking in urban mobility, mountain bikes, road bikes and e-bikes/pedelecs.

The second edition of the show last year recorded impressive growth, with more than 5,700 industry professionals attending, an increase of 14 percent on 2009, plus more than 20,000 consumers.

Names included cycle clothing manufacturers Skins, Vaude, Biotex and Löffler; sales and distribution company Cycle Europe; and lighting firms Busch & Müller, Q-Lite and Sigma Elektro.

Klaus Dittrich, chairman of show organiser Messe München, said: “The strong increase in trade visitors clearly shows how attractive the exposition and its venue are for the industry. We consider ourselves a strategic partner for the cycling industry and can offer plenty of space to help fully tap the growth potential of this industry.”
