Sleeping safely
Danish outdoor equipment brand Nordisk has introduced a special test procedure to ensure all its tents are safe and secure even in the worst conditions.
N
ordisk has introduced a new test procedure to ensure ‘no obstacles stand in the way of great adventures’. All its outdoor shelters are now put through their paces in a wind tunnel to prove their fitness for extreme situations.
Nordisk says this means its tents have already undergone a ‘whole range of experiences before they embark on their first proper journey’ with the wind tunnel test. This, it says, is the best way to ensure that the tents can withstand even the roughest storms.
A Nordisk test team accompanies the progress of the mobile shelters part of the way, although entrance to the wind tunnel is prohibited at wind speeds of 20m/s and upward, where they are left alone to face their toughest test.
A hurricane is equivalent to number 12 on the Beaufort scale, the highest level of the most widely used wind force measurement scale, and achieves a wind speed of 32.7m/s (118km/h). The scale describes sea conditions at this wind speed as 'huge waves. Sea is completely white with foam and spray. Air is filled with driving spray, greatly reducing visibility’.
On land, a hurricane inflicts widespread destruction, toppling mobile homes, damaging light residences and breaking windows. In wind tunnel testing, Nordisk says the majority of its tents withstand even these wind speeds. Wind force is built up gradually in stages of
2.5m/s, from
the equivalent of a stiff breeze to gale force and hurricane level. At the same time, simulated downpours test the water-proof standards of the tents and combine the impact of wind and rain. Thanks to these comprehensive wind and rain tests Nordisk is now able to offer all adventurers a symbol that indicates the wind speed which each tent can withstand undamaged, despite some buckling or deformation.
Nordisk test details
● Tents now subjected to wind tunnel testing
● Replicates hurricane conditions with wind speeds up to 32.7m/s
● Simulated rain simultaneously introduced to provide comprehensive testing against the outdoors
● New symbol introduced to show what wind speeds tents can withstand
