Choice Hotels Europe Coverage: There are 37 Choice properties in the UK made up of Clarion hotels, aimed at the four-star market; Quality, for the three-star market; and Comfort, which sits in the two-star market. Owner: Choice Hotels Europe is a trading name of Quality Hotels, part of Choice Hotels International, which franchises 6,000 hotels around the world; including 500 across Europe. Amenities: Clarion offers full-service restaurants, Quality properties have restaurants and bars, while dining options within Comfort are more informal. Free internet access or wifi at Comfort and Quality hotels. A Comfort Inn was scheduled to open in Hyde Park in April. Rates: Comfort £35, Quality £40, Clarion £70.
Citizen M Coverage: A newcomer to the scene, Citizen M has two properties in Amsterdam (city-centre and airport), one in Glasgow and has plans to open a further three hotels next year: two properties in London (Southbank and Tower Hill) and a property in New York’s Manhattan. Owner: Netherlands-based KRC Capital Amenities: free wifi, free movies, power showers, fast check-in via kiosk, and 24-hour food outlet CanteenM. Rates: From £49 in Amsterdam.
Etap
Travelodge Coverage: 463 hotels including ten in Ireland and three in Spain. The budget chain opened 70 new properties last year and currently has 36 under construction, with four new properties already open this year. Owner: Dubai International Capital Amenities: Wireless access, flatscreen television, free tea and coffee. Restaurants and bars in most properties. Rates: From £19.
Etap
Coverage: Over 380 hotels across Europe, including 17 in the UK. Owner: Accor Hotels. Amenities: Wifi available and all-you-can-eat breakfast. Entire portfolio is being renovated, based on the brand’s cocoon concept, for completion in 2014. Rates: From £18 for 30-day advance purchase.
Express by Holiday Inn Coverage: More than 2,000 properties worldwide including 198 hotels across Europe, Middle East and Africa with a further 47 in the pipeline for the region. Owner: InterContinental Hotels Group. Amenities: Power shower, complimentary breakfast, broadband access, fully licensed bar at most properties, dedicated room offering refreshment facilities. Rates: From £39.
Ibis
Coverage: 55 hotels in the UK including major cities such as London, Birmingham and Manchester. Owner: Accor Hotels Amenities: 24-hour reception as well as snacks and drinks, a range of restaurant concepts, high-speed internet access in rooms Rates: From around £35 for a 20-day advance purchase.
Ibis
Days Inn Coverage: 58 properties in the UK. Owner: Independently owned and operated under franchise agreement with Days Inn Worldwide, part of the Wyndham Hotel Group. The chain expanded last autumn with the addition of 15 roadside hotels, owned by Roadchef. Amenities: Free wifi or high-speed internet, flatscreen television, tea and coffee making facilities. Rates: Vary but from about £42.
Easyhotel Coverage: 16 hotels – four in Europe, one in Dubai, one in Edinburgh and seven in London. Owner: easyGroup. Amenities: All rooms have ensuite bathrooms. Towels included but toiletries aren’t. TV use, wifi and house- keeping is charged for. Vending machines available for food, snacks and drinks. Rates: From £26.
Jurys Inn Coverage: 31 hotels including 24 in the UK. A property is slated to open in Newcastle in August while a Portsmouth hotel is scheduled for 2012. Owner: Jurys Inn Group Amenities: Jurys Inn positions itself as ‘four-star without the price tag’, offering full-service, city-centre locations. High-speed internet access available, plus tea and coffee facilities and restaurant and bar concepts. Rates: At the time of going to press room-only rates were from £65 in Liverpool, £67 Derby, £75 Manchester and from £79 in Birmingham.
Premier Inn Coverage: More than 590 hotels in city locations in the UK and Ireland. Owner: Whitbread Amenities: Restaurants and licensed bars in every property, wifi internet access available in most hotels, fast-check in service. Rates: From £29 although seasonal promotions can mean lower advance rates.
Tune Hotels Coverage: One UK property in London’s Westminster, plus nine in Malaysia and one in Indonesia. The Tune Hotel in Westminster, opened last summer, is the first of 15 locations scheduled to open across the Greater London area by 2017. Owner: Tune Group, the private investment group of Tony Fernandes, founder and Group CEO of low-cost airline AirAsia. Amenities: Operates a ‘limited service’ concept, meaning all extras are charged for, including towels, soap, shampoo, hairdryer, TV, internet and room-cleaning service. At the Westminster property a Costa breakfast package is available for £4.95. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms with power showers. Rates: Double rooms typically start from £35 per night, but can drop as low as £9.
Yotel
Coverage: ‘In-terminal’ hotels at London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Amsterdam Schiphol. A further Yotel opens in New York City this June. Looking to expand into major city centres and international airports in UK, Europe, US and worldwide. Owner: IFA Hotels & Resorts. Brainchild of Yo! Company, responsible for Yo Sushi and Yo Zone spas. Amenities: Minimalist ‘cabin’ style rooms, bookable in slots of anything from four hours upwards. All have ensuite bathrooms with power showers, towels and toiletries. Check-in is at automated booths, airport-style. Rooms also feature TVs and free wifi access. Snacks and drinks are available from a 24/7 ‘Galley’. Rates: For the standard single cabins, rates are from £26 for four hours and an average overnight stay is around £60. Rates at the New York hotel will start from $149.
