CV SHOW SPOTLIGHT
“This type of theft is a major prob- lem for councils,” says Truckminder sales director Filip De Kock. “If they have the fleet parked up overnight and all the catalytic converters are stolen then all their recycling vehicles will be off the road.”
Mix Telematics believes simple
could be better, which is why at the show it will be launching Mix Track, a version of its long-running Datatrack commercial vehicle track and trace product. Alan Johnson, the commer- cial manager, says that as the technolo- gy has moved on, various features have been added to Datatrack that had made the system more complex and less easy to use. Mix Track is an attempt to start afresh with a simpler product. “Systems have become quite com- plex and difficult to operate,” he explains. “Mix Track is for people who want simple track and trace. The key is accessibility. The user interface has been transformed to make it very easy to see where the vehicle is and what its history is. It is very intuitive.” Johnson adds that in the recycling industry there has been an increase in interest in the product for checking that drivers were not using the facili- ties for doing cash-in-hand jobs outside their normal work.
“Say there is a row of shops and they have a contract with shop A, but not with shop B to collect waste. You can put a fence on the screen to show which shops are customers. This means you can see if the driver is col- lecting waste from adjacent properties. This stops drivers taking cash jobs from non-customers.”
Eminox will be running a surgery at the show for those worried about the impact of phases three and four of London’s Low Emission Zone (LEZ), due to come into effect in January 2012.
Phases one and two meant that vehi- cle emissions had to meet Euro 3 standards on particulates, whereas the new phases will take it to the tougher Euro 4 level. Phase three will extend the vehicles affected to minibuses and trucks from 1.2 tonnes, and that will hit a number of local council vehicles. “A significant number of waste vehi- cles in London are not Euro 4 com-
Cameron helps combat fuel theft
A waste recycling company is strug- gling to account for £1M of fuel a year out of the over £30M worth it uses, and Cameron Forecourt is hoping that its fuel management system can solve the problem.
“We are in the process of solving it at the moment for them, which is why we can’t say who it is,” says Martyn Gent, sales & marketing manager. But he adds that the problem the company was having was quite common. “The problem of fuel theft added to the escalating cost of fuel is becoming a bigger problem.
Helpful: fuel management systems
“The company we are looking at has had a hefty loss of fuel over a period of time.” He maintains that the big advantage of his company’s fuel management system is that as well as keeping a record of fuel supplied, it also measures the amount of fuel in the tank, whereas some systems just give a theoretical value for this.
“We have a probe that goes into the tank to give an accurate measurement. This is linked to a web-based system so you can always see what the stock is.”
The system will also report an alert via a text message if it detects the fuel level dropping when the pump is turned off, indicating either a theft or a leak.
pliant,” says Mike Galey, Eminox’s director of marketing. “We are getting enquiries from the London councils about how they can upgrade their vehi- cles.”
He advised those worried to start taking steps now as the industry for upgrading vehicles only had so much capacity and that could be stretched as the deadline neared. The company opened a service centre outside London to cater for the demand.
Eminox will be showing its two par- ticulate traps at the exhibition – the CRT and FBC. The CRT continuously regenerating trap reduces particulate emission by around 95% and virtu- ally eliminates carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. The FBC fuel borne catalyst injects an iron compound into the fuel to reduce the combustion temperature and uses a silicon carbide filter to trap particulate matter.
