Time to get into gear for the CV Show 2011
As preparations for this month’s Commercial Vehicle show get under way, Steve Rogerson speaks to some of the companies that will be exhibiting to find out their plans for the event
visitors, the CV Show, together with Workshop 2011, is the biggest single sourcing opportunity for the UK road transport and logistics industry and its three-year absence has been deeply felt by operators and their suppliers, large and small.
T One supplier eager to promote
its latest kit at the event is Ratcliff Palfinger, which is seeing a growing market for adapting its lifts for waste disposal and collection applications as councils become more aware of health and safety requirements. The firm will be exhibiting lifts for a wide range of vehicles and applica- tions, but of particular interest is its RQ527 with a galvanised steel frame and lightweight aluminium platform that can be fitted with optional flush, hinged side ramps, runner-mounted side gates and drop-in front gates. “We can adapt this platform so that it tips and folds,” says Beverley Jackson, sales manager. “This means it can be used to tip out waste. It can also be used for house clearing as it can be brought up to floor level.”
She adds that there has been an increase of this kind of use to reduce the manual side of the job.“This is because of health and safety. More commercial vehicles are having lifts to reduce manual handling. It is a grow- ing market. It has been growing for the past four years, mostly for council vehicles that have tipping duties.” While Mercedes-Benz is well known

for its Econic refuse truck, the com- pany is finding more councils are also using the smaller Sprinter van as a sat- ellite refuse vehicle, as its size means it can go places that the larger Econic cannot reach.
“Some councils have restricted
areas where they need smaller vehi- cles,” explains the firm’s commercial vehicles spokesperson, Simon Wood. “These go into the narrow streets and offload onto the bigger vehicles.” The Sprinter is a 3.5 tonne van whereas the Econic is normally
