ENERGY FROM WASTE Mix right to maximise biogas
With increasing volumes of waste being processed to cre- ate biogas from anaerobic diges- tion, it is becoming increas- ingly important to ensure that plant availability and working capacities are maintained. While it is acknowledged that the biogas industry has
benefited from the technologi- cal expertise gained from both the digestion of feed crops such as maize and from the waste water industry, problems are occurring with other types of waste material.
Success: the Vaughan Rotamix system
The use of household waste material within the AD indus- try highlights the problems associated with inconsistent waste materials, even when they have been pre-conditioned and blended before entering the digestion process. These prob- lems affect the digester per- formance in that they either reduce working capacity by set- tlement or strangle gas release by blanketing the surface. Failure to suitably condi- tion simultaneously with mix-
ing also creates problems with concentrated material leaving the digester. Premature wear of heat exchanger recirculation pumps caused by grit deposi- tion is also common where poor mixing is prevalent. System Mix has developed its Vaughan Rotamix system to address these problems. In one recent example, the company’s Rotamix tank mixing systems were
retrofitted
ments for submersible and pad- dle mixers on two digesters at a major waste-to-energy plant in Bedfordshire. Since being commissioned gas production has increased significantly and maintained its high level.

EA on road with biofuels
Convert2Green is working with the Environment Agency to supply its transport fleet with EN standard bio-fuels as part of the agency’s goal to
as replace-
reduce its CO2 emissions by 33% by 2015. Convert2Green will supply eight operational depots with B25 bio-diesel which is recycled from 100% waste vegetable oil taken from fully sustainable UK sources. “The waste cooking oil is sourced in the UK,
recycled
and blended to create the bio- diesel so it has a low carbon footprint,” says Andy Webb, director of Convert2Green.
